Allison Janey's character coming home in the morning

What was up with Allison Janey coming home in the morning? She had such a strange expression walking up the street. Had she spent the night with another woman? Or was she working late and anticipating some kind of bitch fit about it from Clarissa?

My first assumption has always been that she was having an affair and certainly didnt want to hear from Clarissa in regards to her coming home so late. Clarissa in general is a little high strung and is just that person who does harp on things, so even if there wasn't an affair, the fact remains that she would/could have said something.

I always thought she was having an affair but then it is really never mentioned or suggested again. The other option is she works late, maybe as a nurse or something, but I don't think her job is ever mentioned, is it?

She mentions getting her shift covered so that she can attend the party. Then moments later says to Clarissa something like- don't get too excited about me being off work; she says it sarcastically since Clarissa doesn't even respond to the fact that she gave up her shift unexpectedly at the last moment to be there for her on a difficult night.

But I don't know her profession. Medical field or restaurants could be a good guess.

In the book Sally was an editor, but its never made clear in the film. I always assumed she had been working and quietly getting into bed as to not wake Clarissa.Referenced later that she does in fact work nights.

Actually, she was a TV producer which wouldn't explain why she came home so late in the film. My take on it is that, in the film, her and Clarissa had an open relationship and Sally had just been to visit a lover.

She and Clarissa obviously were going through a rough patch. I never got the impression that Sally was having an affair. I just thought she worked late enough to get her home after Clarissa went to sleep - to avoid her.
