Why did Virginia kiss her sister like that?

On the DVD commentary the filmmakers talk about it and say there was nothing sexual in it, but it was a way for Virginia to get her sister's attention, to sort of suck life from her, because what her sister had offered (a cold hug and goodbye) was almost dismissive of Virginia and her plight, and it was Virginia's way of saying "That's not nearly enough".
