This is Julianne Moore's film

The impact of Nicole's performance has drastically receded with the years and although Meryl's performance still holds up very well (she is very believable), this film belongs to Julianne Moore. She is the soul of the work. Without her, the film would be about Kidman's tortured genius and Streep's lovelorn, pensive neurotic. Only with the addition of Moore's depressed, frustrated romantic does something click with this film IMO, truly bringing it down to earth.

PS - by the way, as far as Nicole's segment of the film goes, the performance that really engages me there is Miranda Richardson as her sister Vanessa. Made me wish she could have reprised the role on stage or in another film from Vanessa's perspective. Such a spirited eccentric character (note the way her kids refer to her as Nessa instead of Mother and how she refers to them as "changelings")

She is most definitely the soul of the work.

I agree. Julianne Moore was so amazing in this movie.I was so mesmerized by her. Those close-up shots of Julianne--WOW! She can say so much with just a look.

Meryl and Julianne were out of this world great. However, I still think that Nicole Kidman owned this film. She is captivating every single second on the screen! I have never seen her so good before or after this, perhaps that's why. Not to mention that she truly had the most fascinating character to portray. I had trouble relating to both Moore and Streep.

Couldn't agree more. Nicole Kidman for me is the great discovery of the movie.
A couple of days ago I watched the movie without any informations but that MS was in it.
From the very beginning all the three characters won me. I understood there was a portrayal of three women in a similar situation in three different generations. MS was as wonderful as she uses to be, Moore was excellent too, but the best performance was of that third woman... I started a tiny little research (i.e.: I read the DVD-cover with my glasses on) to discover it was ... Nicole Kidman! I even hadn't recognized her! Shame on me and a huge compliment to Mrs. Kidman.

English is not my first language. Any corrections are welcome.

"Nicole's performance has drastically receded with the years"
How can a performance recede with years? If it was good then it is good now and it will be good in the year 2155.

Is it like hair? Has she fallen out of the film in some way?🐭

I think Nicole was brilliant and fully deserved her Oscar, but yes rewatching the film nowdays makes me appreciate Moore's work much more than I did back then.
