So the moral of the story is this: Don't live for the ones you love?

If you are suffering more by living for the ones you love and making them suffer more with their worries for you then just end it?

That is kind of suicide encouragement, don't you think? Even Virginia Wolf made it sound that way and Julia's character Oh and Streep's character but she didn't have thoughts of suicide.

I have to disagree with you here...

The theme seemed to have been that people were soldiering on, going through the repetitions of life because they wanted to stay for someone else, not themselves.

That's the theme: live life for yourself, whatever you have to do. If you live for others, you will have no sense of fulfillment, and neither should those you live for.

That was my take, anyways...

"Death, you are my bitch lover!"

Sounds like the same conclusion I reached, don't live for others, you should live for yourself otherwises end it.

reply

Haha, yes, but I don't see it as encouragement for suicide...

Indeed, you should go work a library for a meaningful and exciting life!

I wouldn't go as far to say that it encourages suicide, but I though it was great how the movie addresses it head on.

Choosing to end it all is by no means an easy choice to make, but some people do make it and it is their right to do as they see fit. I wouldn't advocate it but I can understand that sometimes it just all becomes too much. Hence the "it is possible to die" line.

People seem to think that the movie is also about very selfish people, but I don't see it that way. How were any of them selfish? Virginia was ill, Laura had no choice and Clarissa devoted herself to caring for a sick man while Richard was already feeling like he was dead anyway, in fact he held on as long as he could and only for Clarisssa's sake.

I didn't understand it then but I understand now, I mean at the time my sister wanted to kill herself over the father of her child. I was so mad at her that I threaten to take full custody of my nephew if she succeeded in killing herself. And since he was still a baby, I would do my best to make sure no one knows of her existences to her son. I'd let everyone know that in my family.

Now I understand it and I can see that going on living in pain for your loved ones is bad. Cause they (the suicidal people) suffer more cause they want to leave this world but they can't cause that would hurt them.

Laura had no choice

Yeah right, just because she said so?

reply

No, but because leading a singularly miserable existance just for the sake of conforming to a preset social norm is no way to live.

Yet it's a better way to live than many others, including one that causes so much undeserved hurt to your 5-year-old boy most importantly and to your good-hearted husband secondly. Also, there were other solutions.
