Can someone explain to me what was up with the last shot from the big game? The shot were they were all like "ohh its the IMPOSSIBLE shot!". Granted it didnt look like an easy shot but certainly not the hardest shot I could think of in pool, and for that matter not even the most difficult one in the movie. It just seemed so phony at that point in the movie, like how convenient theyve been making all these hard shots and now the final shot of the big game and oh what a surprise its the IMPOSSIBLE SHOT. Anyways who cares I guess ...
Granted no shot is truly "impossible", that one was as close as it could get. I have shot pool for years, and I run through 9 racks rather quickly, but I know there is a difference between a tough shot and that shot. Since the balls were lined up with the left bunker perfectly, no kiss shot could have sunk the ball, it would've froze or just ran off the bunkers. At that point in the game, neither player could have risked giving the shot up on a safety, so the ball needed to be sunk. But the shot that Mars took was in fact the best possible shot at the ball, and it was shot perfectly, and still the ball didn't get enough push. I'd give you a hundred shots at that ball, and I'd be surprised if one dropped in.
No, actually it was great. All I did was party and get laid. I had my whole life ahead of me.
Not to nit pick but not talking about his shot in the movie either but when you say no shot is impossible that's not quite true... any sort of shot where you have to cut it at all more than 90 degrees is impossible... physics, it's a wonderful thing.
Hmm...I'm just trying to understand what you're saying "cut it at more than 90 degrees"? Does that mean cut a ball at an angle more than 90 degrees? If so, thats obviously not true, and very easily can be done. With four bunkers, almost any shot is possible if you think about it. If the angle can't be achieved head on, it can be off a bunker shot. That's not to say those shots are easy, but with correct timing and speed, I can't think of a single shot that is truly "impossible". If you could talk to me in pool talk maybe I'd understand a little better (i skipped physics in high school).

Hmm... just to be a pain. Let's take nine ball for the game and the two ball for the shot. Now, say that ball is literally surrounded by four other balls and they're all touching. Wouldn't that be an impossible shot since there's no way to hit the two...
Unless, I guess if you hit it from above... hmm...
First of all, if only four balls are involved they would not all be touching. But, for arguement's sake, lets say that the 2 was surrounded by a circle of touching balls, whatever the numbers. A skilled player could still skip the cueball and bounces off the top of the two, after which it hits in another ball on the table (say, the six or seven ball.) Since the player is smart, (s)he has already called a safe shot. The next player is then screwed. Not impossible, just difficult.
That's not true. He was shooting to make it in - the spin of him having the next shot was the twist he threw in, and chazz and shroeder would have given him the game had he made the shot. The point is though the shot is tough as hell to hit...and with a little more speed it would have sunk, but I don't think he did it purposely.

AkA, read Ralph's comment again... He DIDN'T want to make the shot. He just wanted to move the ball so it could be made AFTERWARD. If he'd made it, it would've been Ricky's win because he bought the shot from him. I see what you mean about it looking like he was trying to make it, but suspend your disbelief and put yourself in the movie for a second. He wants to miss, so that he can make it when it's HIS shot.
And it is pretty hard; not impossible, but I certainly wouldn't want to try it for that much money. I'd play safe in a heartbeat.
I agree, I'm just saying that let's say he DID make the shot. He obviously would have taken credit. And because he didn't, he followed through with the con. And he wasn't "setting himself up", I play pool and if you were to setup a shot like that from that position, you wouldn't ring it off two bunkers, you'd simply tap it about 40 degrees to the side and then make the corner pocket shot. Either way, who cares.

I agree that he would've taken credit if he had made it, and did the con when he didn't, and normally I'd say, yeah, if you knew you were taking the next shot, you'd set it up like you said... but he didn't know that, did he?
I say "normally" because at this point we're arguing about something that has nothing to do with the movie, so we might as well agree to disagree and hope we meet over a tble sometime...
I think you have completely missed the point of that scene akareviews. It was a hustle, clear and simple, and thus beating his own mentor in what he thougt him all those years.
I got the point. I'm just saying that if he were to make that shot, he would've taken it. Whatever, he didn't, and maybe he wasn't trying to. So he hustled him and got the next shot and won. It's not a big deal, I'm just saying that in the occurence that he did hit the shot, he'd take it. It was a sweet hustle though.
