is you were a pool hustler would you...

wear a t-shirt with "hustler" printed on it,I mean this film is so stupid and unrealistic ,it is daft.
Like a card counter going to a casino with a t-shirt "card counter".
This film to me seems like the director saw the hustler and the color of money, tried his hand at playing pool for money and got slaughtered,so this is the only way he can live out his fantasy!

this movie had the potential to be the best pool movie ever. especially since walken is in it.... he's the man. but it fails to live up to it's potential because mars whatever his name is cast himself as the lead role when he should have gotten a better actor (looks and talent) to play the role.
hustler and color of money were so cool cuz the leading roles were played by cool guys that you wanted to be. that doesn't happen here, a big flaw in my opinion.

also, the only time he wears the hustler shirt is during the last match when the players already know everything about each other. making it ok to advertise. your right that a hustler when he's hustling a stranger doesn't wear that shirt but these were unique circumstances. making it more realistic. and when he actually does hustle him, an even bigger slap in the face.
everything was there for this movie except that lack in casting. ah, what could have been, non?

He was only wearing the shirt once and that was at the end of the movie when everyone knew he was a Hustler. He could have walked in to that poolhall wearing a Pizza Hut shirt and they would still have known he was a hustler. The shirt was meant for irony, and to show respect to the movie that came before The Hustler. I thought it was a nice touch and pretty funny.

Agreed. I dont think that because he has that particular shirt on makes this movie unrealistic. I don't know about you people. But i spend at the very least 6 hours a week in a poolhall. you get guys who use lines from this movie all the time. so to whoever said you wouldnt want to be like mars or "johnny" you'd be suprised.

Ugh...the guy who wrote the film was the main character. One of the things I looked for was to see who was the games. Many movies (Fast and Furious) have famous actors, but all the action's performed by stunt doubles. In this movie, all the good players were playing pool. If you notice, the main character was the one who made that one-handed shot, and he was shown continuously performing trick shots, so he's obviously a good player.

And yes, he only wore the shirt when he was playing against a pro and a guy who used to back him up. It's like a poker player going to the WSOP wearing a witty poker t-shirt, something he'd never do grinding in a casino.

he wore the shirt because he never wanted to be a hustler and joe made him that way its kinda a f off to joe as he is about to whoop him and mars cast him self as danny the younger brother but by the time the movie got off the groun he was too old

First off, Mars is a damn good pool player in real life. He probably cast himself just so he wouldn't have to train some pretty boy actor on the basics just so he looked competent.

Second, have you ever seen the movie Diggstown? That movie begins with the best hustle of all time. Flat out TELL people you are going to win and take their money. What're they gonna do? Get mad at you for them not listening to your warning? Wearing a shirt that says Hustler on it would be absolutely perfect. A lot of people will simply think you are an arrogant, cocky prick.. but after you destroy them they'll either quickly realize they should've heeded your warning OR, if they're good too (which most people who play for money SHOULD be) they may be even more inticed to keep going so they can gloat. Either way they don't get mad because you really didn't trick them.

Anyway, let's just leave the hustling to the professionals. :)

Right on !That used to be one of my favorite husles. I would show up with a nice cue and all the accessories, tell everyone in the place I KNOW that I am the best player in there and that I can beat em all, and proceed to play terribly and lose for the first hour or so. The whole time I am telling them that I am still warming up and I usually play much better than I am right now and I just dont understand why I am losing, or you are just lucky. It is like putting a big target on myself, people cant help it they HAVE to play me to show me I am wrong. The more I lose the more trash I talk. Soon I have a line of people wanting to play me. Suddenly I start to get lucky and win a few, a little bit later I am running racks and collecting the money, All of a sudden someone acuses me of hustling and I say "hey I have been telling everyone who will listen that I am a player and you should not play me for money cause you don't have a chance, it is not my fault that you didnt listen" . It is fantastic cause they cant argue. The point is if you spend any time at all in a pool room you will run across a dozen people who talk so much trash and think they are the best, when they cant run three balls. The more you talk trash the less people believe you. Do you think just because someone puts on a Bulls Jersey that they can play pro basketball? Think about it.

Saying that the word "Hustler" gives away some characteristic is like saying your chubby friend you've nicknamed "Tiny" gives away some characteristics of him. Hustlers often pretend to like pool but not be good at it. Good hustlers show some degree of skill, just not the incredible skill to discourage opponents. The term Hustler on his shirt could simply be viewed as either irony or aspiration.

Furthermore, the Hustler on the shirt refers to Hustler magazine anyway. There's no "Hustler" pool shirt to label hustlers. lol, it's not like the scarlet letter!
