I just saw this movie again the other night, and I couldn't help but notice the insane number of similiarties to Rounders (dating a law student, using his skills to land her a job, the elderly father figure, the grand finale face-off, trying to make it as a pro at the end, etc etc the list goes on and on). Was this done deliberately?

How many times must this come up? This story was written many years before the movie was ever made, way before Rounders was made. It's not Rounders is even a brilliant original idea. You take a hustler and throw in normal problems (girlfriend, school, etc.) and you have this kind of movie. Mars Callahan didn't make a truly original film. And Rounders wasn't truly original, either. The difference is that Rounders is probably a better film. I still really like Poolhall Junkies, though.
