What would have been a smarter ending

Instead of Bess physically disappearing, it's revealed in a time lapse much later that the girl with the multiple personalities, one of them hasn't shown up since July 27th.

Interesting.

I like the idea that PROT was recruiting a new host for forthcoming K-PAX'ian tourist.

Robert (PROT's host) was no longer needed -- perhaps unusable.

Enjoy these words, for one day they'll be gone... All of them.

great idea.
i also did not understand how Bess's body went missing, whereas Prot could travel without his.
he travels as consciousness, so should she.
but it would have looked stupid to have two invalid bodies in wheelchairs, plus it would have taken the ambiguity out of the ending.
i love your idea and its subtlety.
the writers could have developed a character thats a patient with a split personality and introduced us to both of the personalities over the length of the movie.
then when Prot has his "stroke" everyone can be disappointed that he did not live upto his promise and took no one along.
and the ending could have had a bit of a time lapse and we could have got to know in a conversation between jeff bridges and another doctor that the patient has shown remarkable signs of recovery since July 27th, and no longer displays the other personality.

it could even be more beautiful if the patient is a male that has the alternate personality of a very desirable and kind female (think Jared Letto in Dallas Buyers Club, and at the end only the male bit remains, and the girl part is off with prot, or we can atleast believe so.

then when the chosen one would have said to Prot, "I know who you are" as Bess does in the film, it could have been the female personality of the patient speaking.
