The real explanation about the ending of K-Pax ****spoiler alert******

I think the real meaning of the movie is NOTHING.... yes, that's right. The director or the writer couldn't deliver a convincing finish because that was not actually possible after giving Undeniable evidence supporting both alternate theories (one is that Spacy was a alien and another is Spacy was a Schizophrenic.

Evidence of Spacy being an alien
1. Non responsiveness to high dose of drug
2. Giving accurate description of the orbital system before anytype of publication about those things
3. Most importantly, detecting UV light, which is not at all possible

There are some minor evidences also for this theory and all taken together, they can not dismissed to be a mere co-incident. So the director had no way to depict him as a schizophrenic in the conclusion

Evidence of Spacy being a Schizophrenic

1. Do not eat meat and porter had a story to hate meat
2. His "going out of control" due to in Jeff's house and the reason behind it supplied in the movie

So, finally, the directer had to leave the question open about the identity of Spacy. That is why, the ending of the movie is very weak. The makers just couldn't cut away all the lose ends.
I still give the movie 8 out of 10 because except the last few minutes, it was a 10 on 10 material.

I enjoyed the mystery, beautifully open. But you should also know, upon reading the book, it is very obvious what has happened, and it is a shame Softley felt the need to muddy the waters.

Can you shed a light on what "obviously" happened in the book?

I'm pretty sure, by the way it was presented, that the director is in favor of the Prot being real theory. At the very end of the credits, Jeff Bridges character is staring up at the stars in wonder. It's a beautiful, very moving sequence, and I'm glad it's there (for those of us who sit through the credits). To me, that is all the evidence I need that "there is something more out there."

Watch the deleted scenes from the movie on the DVD, they effectively show that Prot was an alien.

well then that bugs me that they made it deliberately vague. i hate when they do that

It's a better movie that way. If they answered your questions you wouldn't be here talking about it :)

I like to believe he was an alien. Biggest proof for me in the movie is that Bess left her shoes. If she escaped she'd most likely need shoes. Unless left on a beam of light while she slept....

More problems:

If we are to believe that Prot was some kind of "spirit," only using the other guy's body, and that's how he travels through space, then how could he take Bess with him?

If Prot was an alien with such advanced technology & knowledge, then he would know that by telling people he was an alien, he had a very high chance of being drugged up & locked away, meaning he would never get back home.

random possible, unprovable, not shown in movie theory:

prot set everything up perfectly, on purpose.

a) when he left his friends body, that the doctors would take good care of him, but GETTING admitted to the hospital on purpose
b) when he zapped the cameras for his exit, and his glorious build up to that day, he had everyone looking the other way for Bess to exit quietly. she may have had to OFF her body to join prot to k-pax, and the body would be found later.

So he wasn't schizo, he was just 'putting it on' with complete, conscious knowledge of that fact? What about the hypnosis, was that an act? He'd have to have some mastery of the senses to stick to his facade while under hypnosis, wouldn't he?

I'd have preferred if the ended had leaned more towards him not being an alien/spirit master/whatever, if I'm honest. Yeah, there'd be some logical points to endure (or maybe rewrite)-- the UV light being the main one-- but I just found the tragic backstory to be, well, tragic. And I prefer it to be attached to the actual character I've spent 2 hours with, and Spacey has brought to life majestically, than not. The movie was too engaging to go out on a cliched up-to-you mystery note; I wanted a little more resolution.

I dont understand why theres any reasonable doubt about him being an alien.. Its clear as day that since he can see freaking UV light that he's NOT human. You cant explain that away, and the argument towards him being a schizo holds no water to this abnormal fact. He was an alien inhabiting a humans body, plain and simple.

That's the beauty of the whole thing! We're here discussing it because we're interested and we don't know.
Personally I LOVE IT!🎈🚀

Well, riddle me this: If those were human eyeballs, how does that make him an alien? That doesn't mean he wasn't an alien, but it doesn't add a thing to the argument he was an alien. Now if the claim was he had an alien body, you might have an argument there. But that's not the claim. No one is claiming that body wasn't human. It is the mind in control of the human body that is in question.

I dont mean for this to sound like a cop-out, but... Hes an alien. It can be argued that an advanced being capable of instantaneous travel has such a greater understanding of the universe and her secrets that he'd be able to manipulate the frail, mechanical body of a human to do things that "arent in the manual" with little to no effort. For example, I dont know your background in tech, but how many people do you know whos understanding of code and hardware is so vast that they could create a new computer system, or even something as simple as a custom website? To you and the average non-techie that probably seems like an enourmous task, almost impossible, but to those that have devoted their lives to coding and have decades of knowledge on you? Its maybe 4 months to a year of work just implementing what they already know. See what I'm getting at?
