Why was prote arrested in the beginning of the film? All he said was that he didn't have any luggage. I know cops are brutal in the USA, but he would not be booked under an EDP. The police had no reasonable suspicion that he was going to harm anyone or do anything illegal. Plus, he had nothing to do with the mugging. What was even more ridiculous and extreme was how he was thrown into a psych hospital. Again, for what reason? Because he claims to be an alien?
shareWas thinking the exact same thing. Cops can't just arrest someone if they haven't done anything illegal or have them committed if they pose no threat. But then he wouldn't have ever met Jeff Bridges!
shareHe had no identification, they couldn't just say OK then you can go now. They had reason to think he might need medical attention. Whether you believe that happens in real life that is what the script is using.

not having ID isn't an arrest-able offense since there are no state issued mandatory IDs to give. i bet a lot of people in nyc don't have divers licenses
shareI don't know about the laws in the US but where I live not having an ID is not illegal. Cuffing someone that isn't resisting in anyway is illegal though.

I can tell you from experience, be careful what you say around certain people...aka cops because you can end up in a psych ward like Prot.
shareThis is my only beef with this, otherwise, brilliant movie. The beginning. The arrest, the questioning. Why are they asking him these questions? It doesn't make sense. The old woman says he didn't do anything, the war vet says he didn't do anything. He is standing there, he doesn't have the woman's bag or anything else. No reason what so ever.
