This is basically a Bad Movie

Uninspired acting by most of the actors, unconvincing story line, and bad dialogue - I cannot believe anyone would rank this any higher than a 5.

reply

Could you actually give some evidence to back up your claim? I think that everything you said is just wrong. The actors did great, the story line is original, entertaining and, yes, convincing. And I'm pretty sure the dialogue was great.

I think *beep* just happens, but that's just me.

reply

I would call this movie average at best. It had potential to be pretty good but failed on many levels.

I agree. Good acting, especially by Gandolfini - but the whole thing stretches credibility to the limit when - hey presto! - siege weapons suddenly appear... including a trebuchet that was constructed in the yard and 'hidden' around a corner without any of the prison officials noticing!

It's an interesting premise for a movie, but more time should have been spent on the script, and more explanatory scenes should have been put in.

The answer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery.

you're living in a dream world mate, this film is so poop it makes a toilet smell good

This is hilarious. You basically did the same thing you accused the OP of doing.

I didn't think it was that bad. At times it did come off Like Cool Hand Luke Meets the UCMJ, but on the whole, this was a good film.

I have some issues with how prisoners are treated in general, and this film was not any different. Now I am sure that there are very violent prison populations where some very severe measures have to be in place to control that population, but I not sure how realistic movie versions of prisons actually are.

Perhaps the portrayal of a military prison was unrealistic. I have no way of knowing. But the acting was uniformly good, all the way around. Maybe the plot wasn't that original, but it was handled well.

Maybe this was not one of the 10 best movies of all time, but I have certainly seen much worse in my time. This one came off as being rather entertaining.

reply

Yeah, I agree. I don't think it was totally horrible but not Oscar worthy either. One big gripe I had with the movie was that the antagonists weren't bad enough. I was expecting the Warden to torture or do some other crazy stuff to the prisoners.

reply

I like this movie a lot. In fact, I just bought it on ebay

reply

This movie was actually really good. It has this rating cause it seems pretty same as other movies. It's like a mix of Shawhack redemption and other movies but its still great

reply

u serious??

robert redford is one of the best actors ever!
and he's specially great in his movie!

and the story line... well, i really don't think this was an unconvincing one! ok, it was a little far-fetched, but com'on... it's a movie!

and bad dialogues?? sorry, i can't agree w/ you!

true: not one of the best movies ever made! but a nice movie nontheless!!

I, also, liked this movie. I believe one thing that is different in this "prison" movie, from other "prison" movies is ... all the prisoners have something in common ... they are (or were) all "soldiers". In most prisons, the prisoners have nothing in common (except race, maybe), but, the reason these guys get along better than most prisoners COULD be THAT underlying element.
I'm not an expert on the penal system, but ... all prison movies don't necessarily HAVE to have "rape" scenes, interracial riots, and such ... to be believable (IMO). I enjoyed seeing a prison movie that was different, in that respect.

"I'm gonna hunt for U, I WILL find U, and I will KILL U"!

Fantastic line!

reply

Yes it is. I can suspend disbelief as well as the next person, but this thing...

It would have been more credible if Redford's character had really shown superpowers after the rock carrying bit, and Gandolfini's character had been the Devil. bwahhhhh

reply

Most definitely ... an instant classic, (in response to "ryckarduh")!

Liam Neeson's line is even better when you don't abbreviate the three-letter-words.

reply

Yep, but unfortunately, it goes over the "letter limit", when I spell them out. I wonder why there is a limit on our sign-offs? IMDb could make it (at least) a 200 or 300 letter limit ... it WOULD help.

Well if this had been made 20 years earlier it would have been a classic.
The acting is solid, the prisoners are maybe a little bit well-behaved but that's what the movie wanted to show and it showed it pretty darn well.

It was bad. For some reason I remembered the movie as being good, so I recently rented to watch again. I can't believe I ever liked it.

For one thing, the movie failed to make Col. Winters a bad guy. At the start of the movie, he is very respectful and, though tough, seems to care about the prison. He wants to maintain control, which is very reasonable as a prison warden. But then, the writers seemingly try to twist the character into a bad guy role by making him behave irrationally. He just decides to kill Aguilar for whatever reason. He decides to call in a heavy response to the hostage threat (which Gen. Wheeler doesn't appear to consider a big deal.)

Wheeler's character is especially unlikable, considering he automatically sides with a convicted criminal over his own men. What message does that send?

General Irwin's character is just the same as Winter's. He starts off likable enough but then, almost contradictory to his desire to just do his time and go home, he begins to instigate and stir up the inmates. It got to the point I really disliked the character.

Most the main characters are contrived and shallow.

Then it just gets stupid. Right under the noses of the guards the prisoners built a trebuchet? They stockpiled homemade rocket launchers and firebombs? Lol, wtf? They attempted to murder the guards and the warden with the projectiles and firebombs. Those prisoners would have been (should have been) shot dead in the courtyard.

This movie had a lot of potential. but it just failed in too many ways.

Well said -

their worse movies out there, trust me.

It was The Last Castle's ending which I was not fond of. It came across as overly righteous for Irwin's cause resulting in an awkward scene. Besides from this, there were a number of implausible moments particulary in the revoult section of the film. It felt pretty cliche.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

No argument there!

My favorite bad movie: Angel of Fury. It was so bad, I was so hoping MST would show it.

reply

This has been one of my favorite movie of all time. I can't believe how low the score is and how many haters there are. Yes, the prisoners act differently in this movie than others but this is in no way unrealistic just because you seen or been to one and been ass *beep* but not all prisons are like that. Or just because you like shawshank redemption movie much that you bash other prison movies like it, personally that movie didn't touch me like others (forgoten the story the next day i watched it) I just remembered that i watched it after reading the plot, i don't get the hype is all about. But you don't see me bashing shawshank redemtion, if you don't like this movie then its your opinion but other people like it like me.

agree, very unconvincing story line with plenty of plot holes. However, it was entertaining so I was okay with ranking it 6

The acting was good here, but the story stunk. As you say, it was very unconvincing.
