Horrible waste of a good cast.

It even seemed like there might be some interesting ideas explored - how two men's egos in conflict can draw others into needless violence.

But it just goes from kinda dumb to absurdly dumb, and in the end it's a total write-off.

My apologies-but when exactly did Lt. Gen Irwin display any ego?
He consistently displayed respect for his fellow soldiers (unlike Col Winters) which is why they were willing to follow him.

Howard obviously didn't watch the film. Irwin was there to "do his time and go home" But instead, his ego (his NEED to be the top chief) led him to become a rabble rouser and troublemaker. And look where it got him.

I have to wonder if you're a troll with such a moronic post.

General Irwin was going to do his time and go home; but he clearly saw that Col. Winters was violating the prisoners' rights under the Uniform Code Of Military Justice and reluctantly took a stand. Aguilar was punished just for showing respect to Irwin by being forced to stand all day in the salute position in the pouring rain and even was about to be beaten till Irwin himself intervened and reminded the Colonel about the correct way to discipline prisoners. Later the prisoners unite and build a wall for Irwin and NOT WINTERS, causing him to bulldoze it out of spite. And did I mention that Aguilar was shot in the temple for not allowing Winters to bulldoze the wall? He was a defenseless person that could have been removed with the prison security forces. Up to that point in the film; Irwin had NO intention of instigating a violent uprising.
There were many instances that Winters showed himself to be little more than a cruel tyrant of a warden in a military uniform that dehumanized the prisoners and Irwin gave them the respect and honor that they had been denied. If you couldn't see that throughout the movie then you clearly were NOT paying attention.

Go watch the film again and this time put your smartphone away (Facebook, Twitter and Skype can wait....)

First of all , Aguilar had attacked his c.o. and was in there for a deservedly good reason. Second, Winter's horrible miscarriage of justice was that he ordered Aguilar to keep saluting after the horn that sounded. Wow, what a terrible punishment!!
Irwin had his chance to walk away, but his ego made him contradict Winter. Irwin was a general, and just had to have the last word with an inferior colonel, so he quoted prisoner rules and regulations.
Later Aguiar stood in front of the bulldozer when he was ordered to lay down. He repeatedly ignore direct orders. Just like the "hero" Irwin had defied his commander and cheif's orders and committed treason by doing so.
Having spite is not illegal. I'm not saying Winter was a good guy, but at least he never disobeyed the president and got men killed, nor did he ever stage a violent prison uprising that got even more men killed. If it wasn't for that traitor Peretz, and the drug dealing Yates , he would still be serving too.

Right, instead all Winter did was order his sharpshooters to fire rubber bullets at inmates heads, kill them, then pass it off as an accident...
