Jet Li's uncle?

Who is that old man? He says he has not been home for 15 years.
At the beginning before Jet Li walks into his shop, he is talking to another man in Chinese, but when he communicate with Jet, he speaks English? Why?

I guess he didn't want the guy he was speaking to to know what he was saying to Jet Li's character so he switched to English. I don't even think the old man is Jet Li's uncle. His shop just seems to be a safehouse for these Chinese agents who are working in Paris because he says that five agents have stayed with him before and all had died.

At one point in the film Jet Li's character claimed that was his Uncle.

I think the guy who posted before you got it pretty spot on. He did say his Uncle but it's suggestive to me that it was part of a cover in order to provide a quiet base of operations while in Paris.

And the actor, Bert Kwouk, is more famous for playing Cato opposite Peter Sellers in the Inspector Clouseau films.

as Richard points out, he is a "sleeper" who houses undercover agents in Paris.

"the uncle" was just Li's cover up for who he was.

he did not want any trouble to come to him.

he did pretty well for himself. hosting a chip shop in a prostitute alleyway for all those years. AND hosting Chinese secret agents lol

From what I understand, in China, it is customary to speak to and of older women and men as "aunt" or "auntie" and "uncle." Plus in this case, it also makes for good cover for Jian to call him Uncle Tai.
