There is a mask on a tree that L.T. walks by right before the final fight. Any ideas? I will find the exact time and post it here.

shareYes. In fact, that mask is the very reason why I entered this discussion board. I was hoping that someone would be able to explain the significance. I assume Friedkin had a reason for including it, but I can't be sure. As best I can guess, maybe Hallum put it there as a warning for Bonham. A sort of Dante-esque "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here" kind of thing. Of course this is purely speculative interpretation on my part. I'd appreciate a more definitive answer on the subject.
shareThe movie is profoundly constructed but hardly profound. I think your Dante theory is a reasonable explanation.
But these two guys are survivalists with an intimite understanding of their surroundings and each other. Maybe it has a significance that they understand, while don't have to comprehend or even aren't supposed to comprehend the significance.
I was just watching the dvd, it is 1 hour 18 minutes and about 20 seconds into the movie.
