They Were Robots?

Can anyone explain this line to me. After Tommy Lee Jones opens Halem's chest that has some letters and his silver star, Jones picks up a note and reads it out load. It says something along the lines of "Those people you sent to kill me were not soldiers...they were robots"

Is he suggesting that those men lack the integrity of soldiers and are nothing but cold blooded killers or is he so crazy and mentally unstable that he actually thought they were literally mechanical robots.

I always figured that he meant that they were machine-like men trained to kill without mercy as if they were robot lacking a conscience!

But then again, what do I know...

Yeah, thats what I believe but a friend of mine tried to convince me that this was clear evidence that Benicio Del Toro's character had completley lost it and gone crazy.

The letter was addressed to LT. Alex beleived that LT had sent the "robots" in the letter after him, and so going insane he thinks they were real robots. if you remember in the training sceens you hear Alex's voiceover. It is a letter to LT talking about how he was losing it and that he feels he is going crazy. Also he killed four people thinking they were "sweepers" coming to kill him. Then you have all the unread letters at the end, more then likely all talked about how he was going crazy. It wasnt some weird cover up plot or a double cross. Kinda stupid to make that the movies plot but only talk about it in one sceen. So in all he had lost it.

Yeah, I took it to mean he was crazy.

TLJ's delivery in that scene was great too, probably the funniest part aside from BDT giving TLJ the finger during the car chase.
