If he had answered any of the letters Benecio was sending him when he was cracking up, he might have made the difference in him becoming a delusional killer. I guess that's why LT looks so guilty the whole movie; he knows all those people's deaths are on his hands.

I think Lt. had issues with his own father that kept him from bonding with any of his trained killers.

Great film. Friedkin is always one of my favorites.
