Benicio is a natural born badass and my favourite actor but...his facialexpressions in this movie was at times really weird. And as much as I want to love this movie and believe me,I REALLY want to...I can´t. Well, for one,as extremely realistic as the first encounter between them feels,as over-the-top,beyond what any human could endure is the final confrontation.
It´s extremey entertaining,Deschanels cinematography and the editing all great...but they both,ESPECIALLY Jones character get sliced up way too much for him to be able to fight back, yet alone after having killed his protege just sit there in sadness comforting him rather then screaming out in extreme pain. The movie dissapoint so cause it touches on subjects it never develops. And I know it´s just an actionmovie but the whole father-son theme is completely wasted.I thought we would get some dialogue before the last fight, where L.T finally apologizes for not responding or reading his letters, for neglecting him....all we get is him reading letters at the end and throwing them in the fire.He felt guilt probably but we never get to really see it.
Also feel like there´s a hint of criticism towards the U.S. government. Train and mold a man tobe a deadly killer, order him to carry out alot of brutal, violent acts in the name of freedom and democracy and when it finally gets too much for him, when he snaps...just put him down like a dog.Know I wasn´t going to watch a documentary but a little development in some areas would´ve been nice. It´s bold to make a hunt thriller this gory and violent and I liked that. Don´t like that a man who has never killed anyone in his life is capable of killing a.."killing machine" like Hallam.
And after The fugitive,U.S marshals and Double jeopardy,to watch Tommy Lee hunt someone for the 4th time...it should´ve been a follow up to U.S marshals, would´ve been better. And it looks cool but knifes don´t fly straight. And a man of Bonhams age actually being able to run miles and track down a supertrained assassin by foot, jump up on a moving train...no.
Agree on the movie being badass and entertaining to a certain level...but it fails in too many departments. In a 90 minute movie, for the last 30 minutes Del Toro has ONE line of dialogue, for instance.Awful script but Friedkin did the absolute best with the material. 5.8/10 here and this time the IMDB rating feels right.Connie Nielsen is one cop I would like to screw over, though.
