Those first guys really were Sweepers

As the movie begins they're clearly looking for him, acting much more cautious than if they were looking for deer.

Yeah,

The DVD commentary say that it was deliberately left vague, but I think it was clear that they were after him. Those are some pretty powerful scopes and they didn't seem at all surprised to find this guy in the middle of the wilderness. They reacted very hostilely to him and then proceed to pursue him. I don't think that even the grumpiest hunters would do that. Once a guy through his knife in a tree, I would have just backed out of there and left as quickly as possible.

I agree they're sweepers. Once you get cut in the face, you RUN!!! lol
The fact he kept going without a complaint proves they're sweepers (or just really, really stupid)
