There was no doubt that those hunters were actually sweepers, even if the scopes didn't give it away, one of the FBI agents claims that one of the hunter had a 9mm pistol. Why would anyone bring a pistol with them to hunt? That doesn't explain why none of the sweepers used the pistol after Aaron clearly demonstrated the range given to them with their scopes counts for nothing as he was still able to close the distance.
In terms of sanity, I also believe that Aaron was set up. He mutilated the sweepers' bodies as a message to the govt, not because he was crazy. Also I believe that they stated he was responsible for another pair of "hunters" being murdered before hand which means previous sweepers. The mutilation had sent a strong message and maybe he did it to make the other would-be assassins scared. As to the part when he calls them "robots" that didn't mean he actually thought they were robots. I can't believe some people on this board actually interpreted it as that. Calling them robots could've meant many things such as they couldn't think for themselves were just following orders not realizing that they're killing an innocent man who was set up. Or it can refer to their robotic like combat style of just using a gun instead of Aaron who preferred his blade and hands. Aaron used martial arts and blade arts to kill his enemies, striking at angles, vital targets, etc. Using proper technique, footwork, etc that all takes time to learn and every move is different a lively. As opposed to simply aiming and firing a gun.
There was another sweeper in the movie, the sniper in the heli was a govt assassin not an FBI SWAT agent, as he had no markings (neither did the heli) to identify him as FBI.
