at the start of the movie, I thought it was lieutenant - but that theory went out the window when L.T. said he was not in the army.

It does stand for Lieutenant,that is the rank the military gave him as a military contractor so the men new where he stood on the food chain

Might have been his initials. LT does stand for lieutenant. He might be called that out of respect or given the name to be called by the students.
