ridiculous

Just watched the movie and really had to laugh when Redford bought the 30 Minutes blackout in China, this is so stupid really, prolly every prison and also military installation in the world and especially the ones in China having full generator back up.

Even not considering this, to fly in with 2 helicopters and extract 2 prisoners from a high security prison in the middle of China is even more ridiculous and impossible.

I don't know why those movies always have those silly loopholes, do they think the audience is stupid?

reply

Pretty much the whole movie felt that way.

reply

Pretty much EVERY movie is like that. Come on... it's a fvcking movie... is it supposed to be realistic? I supposed "Avatar" is realistic, huh?

reply

Right. If you don't willingly suspend your disbelief there are very few movies that you would enjoy.

Helicopter prison escapes have happened. A lot of them failed, but some were successful.

reply

its not as impossible as you make it out to be. this movie is taking place in the 80s i believe so who is to say they had back up generators especially since china was not that rich back then.

reply

Suzhou is not in the middle of China, it is right off the coast of the East China sea. Also the bribed official might have bribed somebody to make sure any back that might exist didn't come into effect.

Certainly it is improbable but not impossible.

reply

What is so hard to believe about Navy SEALS performing a stealthy extraction from a prison without power near the coast of China?

reply

I know. In real life, they came and killed Osama in the middle of Pakistan, or so they say. I mean, if i can believe that, this looked far more likely.

reply

Agreed. I don't think it's impossible to believe.

reply

The issue isnt that they couldn't pull it off, of course they can. The issue is they killed a bunch of chinese govt employees to free a woman who was their prisoner for blowing up their consulate and man who tried to break her out.

raids against terrorists in foreign countries is one thing. they didn't hit a pakistani govt building and kill a bunch of their nationals.

raids against gov't buildings killing their employees and service men is a whole nother issue and a straight up act of war. especially against another major power.

if what happened in this happened in real life it would be an int'l sh't storm of epic proportions.

Hitler had Mussolini rescued by a team of Waffen-SS commandos, just think insane that mission must have been, considering who they had captive. Twas a different time I suppose..

reply

Hitler was at war with Italy by then!

When Hitler sent the Waffen-SS to extract Mussolini and establish a puppet fascist government in northern Lombardy, he was already engaged in hostilities against the Italians. Thousands of Italian soldiers were killed when the Germans attacked and disarmed them. Entire divisions of Italians joined the Anglo-Americans and even Yugoslavian partisans to fight the Nazis.

This is the 1980s. Presumably the Chinese will know who straight up attacked them in an obvious and unforgivable act of war. The woman they saved straight up killed the nephew of China's Premier & dictator. This movie is like the start of an alternative timeline where WWIII began. I found it really hard to feel that this was a happy ending.

reply

But they might have found it so embarrassing that they would instead keep quiet about it.

reply

At the end of the day if he had just left him to die it would've been a pretty s**t film. It's a film, a damn good film so get over it.

reply

As a general rule, visitors to this website like watching movies. I'm pretty darn sure they are aware that movies have plot holes, particularly action movies.

No!, the audience isn't stupid, they're merely able to look past some plot holes, suspend disbelief for a couple of hours and ENJOY a movie.

You should try it some time xx :)

When did Noah build the ark Gladys?

reply

do they think the audience is stupid?

Yes, and they are right most of the time. Even otherwise thinking folks who might work hard just want to relax and hit the neutral switch watching a movie. You can analyze most any movie and come up with tons of flaws.

The irony is in how much it influences reality, like with weapons and such, silencers for just a quick top of the mind example. Most silencers are NFA items, hard to get, because people are afraid of them since killers use them in movies. They aren't actually silent at all. Or auto racing, car crashes, some foolish movie world fact that gets used by somebody in real life and spawns a never ending grape-vine tale.

I wonder how many people think they can kick ass in a fight after watching a bunch of kung-fu or fighting movies just to learn it's nothing like that, at all. Or try just about anything they see in a movie just to find out it's completely different with no "retakes".

If I see another film with CIA operative in the description I'm going to puke

reply

Agreed. Visually this movie is not bad but it is a bit too much of a Redford/Pitt-vehicle. And they cut corners story wise all over the place with the final act as the low point. Not only was what happened ridiculously unbelievable but also they did not spend more than a few minutes on it. I gave this movie a 6/10 and the points were mostly because of the look and not because of story or acting.
