Before i saw this film i thought Diesel was destined to become the next Jean-Claude Van Damme and not the next Schwarzenegger. but after this film i was proved wrong. His character has charisma written all over his face.
I think anybody who has a bad opinion of Diesel must see this film.
I agree, this film was very well made and vin's preformence was very different then some of the other films we say him in. He was very beleavable in my opinion.
vin Diesel is like any other actor, his success is going to be based on his ability to pick good material and good directors. some people have a knack. Arnold did once. Willis did once. Stallone did once. All of them lost it at some point with Willis being the only one who managed to get it back.
Tom Hanks, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne. They all picked great projects.
So anyway, Diesel's career is going to hinge on whether he can continue to pick interesting projects that resonate with people. I hated his last couple but then I'm not the demo he's appealing to.
by no means is diesel a good actor. but hes getting there. he can go beyond xxx and the fast and the furious. such as knockaround guys. that was a good movie with a great cast. if youve seen that one you can tell that hes going for more than your typical smash movie. this could be interesting if deisel gets better.
My personal views on Diesel...To start, it took the guy too long to get here. He did his first flick back in 94, nine years ago. I havent seen Knockaround Guys but from what I have seen, the guy can act. At 36(?), hes got plenty of acting experience and whatnot (read his bio). My favorite character by this guy has to be Richard B. Riddick (Pitch Black). He turned what could have been just another psychopathic serial killer trying to be a badass to a serious, actually intellectual "I know what Im doing, Im just making it look like I dont, so you think Im stupid" kind of guy" (think back to Crazy Bob or Wild Bill or whatever the hell his name was back in The Green Mile). He had a conscience he wasnt willing to expose to the outside world, which in the end caused him to put his life on the line for two other people, something he'd probably never done in his life. Hell, the guy even battles beliefs on christianity. In response to what Ive seen others written in other posts. Yes, Diesel has experience and yes he can act. It all comes down to opinion and whatnot, but coming from where Diesel did, I'd say hes getting his. And as to women liking him because he's hot...at least its not like the "Leo Craze" in the Titanic Era. That is a bad reason to see a movie, but what guy didn't see "Tomb Raider" because Angelina Jolie was in it? Im hoping this film kicks ass, not because I like how it looks when the guy opens the truck door and Diesel is standing there with a shotgun in his face, but because we're gonna (hopefully) see a good dramatic side to Sean Vetter, kind of like we did in Pitch Black (and then watch him whip out the shotgun and go to town). "- Where's Johns? - Which half?" Ha, gotta love that part. All and all, Diesel's not a bad package. "A Man Apart" looks great, and so far the reviews say so too. Ill be seeing this with a friend, and hopefully a sold out theatre...you can't deny it, it looks good.
Vin Diesel's acting abilities are about on a par with those of Keanu Reeves or Schwarzenegger. Limited emotions, average line delivery/timing and wooden characterisations. But he has screen presence and charisma. A perfect match for the no-brainer action flick. I'm not insulting the guy - he's perfect for the material - I mean, could you imagine an action flick with Lawrence Olivier at the helm? If anyone is interested in bald guys who can REALLY act (and this is only my opinion) check out Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast. Then, afterwards, watch "A Man Apart" again and see if your opinion has changed.
I've seen both movies and loved "Sexy Beast," but the demands on the actors involved were just a wee bit different. Kingsley's performance was a marvelous stunt by a classically trained actor, and with his considerable skill he was able to generate more onscreen physical impact than I ever would have imagined him capable of.
Vin Diesel's abilities haven't been tested yet in quite that way (to say the least), but the plain physical impact Kingsley worked for is, for Vin Diesel, just THERE. And people respond to it, generally to the annoyance of movie critics, who like to feel they're above all that kind of thing. Generation after generation, those who are lucky enough to have that apparently natural impact onscreen are consistently underrated as actors. Let's see: John Wayne, Cary Grant, Steve McQueen, Christopher Lee, Tom Cruise....
John Wayne in particular spent nearly 50 years with critics assuming he was getting by on a great look, his size and a unique way of speaking. It took oh, about 20 years after he died for people to admit the man could ACT. Vin ain't John Wayne, but he's dealing with some of the same things.
And don't forget snobbery: That oversized ugly lunk is fine for Pitch Black or Boiler Room, but surely he can't be a MOVIE STAR!
I think it's right to say Vin's ability hasn't really been tested yet, he has done a string of action films (albeit it, good action films, a lot of people really love The Fast and the Furious, myself included), but I'll have to wait until I see him in a really unusual role. I have heard he's gonna do an adaptation of Hannibal in 2004-5 ish, so that should be interesting.
