Define "bad actor"

In my mind, there is a huge difference between a bad actor and a good actor, but there is little to no difference between a good actor and a great actor. The difference between a good actor and a great is almost exclusively related to the material he has to perform or the director that is making more of the stylistic decisions.

A bad actor however is bad regardless of anything. He/she either can't move naturally or speak naturally and often times seem as if they were a 7 year old trying to recite a book report that they were forced to commit to memory. Bad actors are cringe-inducing in how much they take a viewer out of the movie and back to horibble horrible reality.

So what's my point? I just don't get how people here can think so poorly of Vin Diesel's acting. He is a fine and competent actor which has never once crashed my suspension of disbelief. Certainly, some of the movies he's been in have had horribly unnatural dialogue or inane plot devices, but I can hardly blame that on Vin Diesel's acting ability any more than I could blame a quarterback for sucking if his receivers had no arms.

P.S. For all the people claiming others are jealous of Vin...what are you, nuts? Shouldn't everyone be jealous of Vin? Hell, I'm jealous of all actors making 20 million dollars a flic. Mmmmmmm, 20 million dollars.

Hi nosirrah,

I have to agree with you, I have enjoyed Vin's films for what they are, he IS a competant actor, not a great one ..... Not yet. I think he has yet to find the right film to make him bloom. Once found he will rocket higher than he is at the moment (if thats poss Ha Ha ..... 20,000,000 mmmmmmm).

Lets hope he finds HIS role.

I agree with you both. Vin is a great actor. I mean, I really do believe that if given the right role and movie, he could even be Academy Award material, you know?
Maybe people don't realize this, but, before Vin became really big and famous, he did like little films in his college (am I right? i read that somewhere, not sure if I'm totally correct tho) and he got awards.
And, if Vin's such a horrible actor, as everyone says, why is it then that Steven Spielburg, a director many have said is one of the greatest of all time, ask him to be in Saving Private Ryan? I read that in like a bio about Vin. Spielburg wanted him for the movie. So, that's got to mean something, right?
All admit, some of the movie's he's done recently aren't of the hugest calibur, but, they weren't supposed to be, and in my oppinion, are very good regardless. Fast And Furious, XXX (just bought Man Aprart, haven't watched it yet tho) were supposed to be like action movies, movies to appeal to a young audinece, and they did. So, just because the movies he's been in are not award winning or extremly thought provoking, doesn't mean Vin lacks the ability to be in such movies. It just means that that type of role hasn't come to him yet. But I'm positive one will come up in the near future.

I agree too. He's not the greatest... but he's definitely not as bad as people say he is. He was very good in this flick. He wasn't so good in xXx because he forced his acting too much. And I completely agree with the original poster, it all depends of the movie's dialogue and the director.
A small example would be Ben Affleck.. after having seen Gigli you'd say he's horrible, right? But great directors like Kevin Smith made him look pretty good, like in Dogma. I thought he was pretty good in that movie. (Dogma is amazing btw)

Also, I didn't think this movie could be that good but it was. I was surprised... how come it's rated so low? 5.1? I definitely think it deserves a bit higher than that.

I agree, Vin acted quite well in this movie, and evne in Fast and the furious. I wasn;t a big XXX fan, but who was? Lets see how he does in Riddick, Pitch Black was tight.

I think Vin did a great job in this movie. I really don't think he overacted at all, and in XXX i think he did a real good job. Vin is a real good actor and im excited about his next 3 projects, Hannibal and Find Me Guilty might even give him even more recognition. Anyway, He is awesome.
