Why did the drug dealer kill his own wife and kid?

I believe the reason he killed his own family was to reinforce the fact that he as Diablo was a force to be reckoned with and that the most tragic way to prove his status as the number 1 most ruthless drug lord that no-one had better mess with was to kill his own blood.

I disagree. I think he had his wife and kid killed so Sean would sympathize with him and it worked. So he tricked Sean into thinking he was going to help Sean capture the Diablo. Sean returns the favor by signing the transfer of Lucero.

Ya'll need to go back and watch the movie again. The guy in the prison did not have his wife and kids killed...Diablo did. The one in prison was NOT Diablo. He was the one Diablo was taking over from hence the drug war and the wife and kid dying.

Vin Diesel's physique is primarily due to his strict diet regime of Soylent Green.

someone posted a compariosn and said the majority of the ending was changed formt he original cut fo the film. so daiblo which apparently in the original fil was someone else and not lucero, had the family killed. The ending was changed due to neg reactions. It therfore makes the film incoherent. the same thing happened with the stepford wives, where the wives are shown to have robot functions but the end reveals that they were brain washed.
