According to Courtney Love, Edward modeled Sheldon's activist side and general sunny disposition after Woody Harrelson. She mentions it in the commentary for THE PEOPLE VS LARRY FLYNT.

lol I was watching this last night and said to myself "Smoochy sounds just like Woody Harrelson" .......Edward Norton = great actor

I never thought of that, but it totally makes sense.

I always thought Sheldon was very much like Moby, the musician. Even looks like him a bit.

When watching DTS I often kept mentioning to my friends that Ed Norton sounded a lot like Woody Harelson. So much so, that I actually thought that the two actors just had a similar dialect and I actually took it to be Ed's real dialect even though I've heard him speak a thousand times. He just does it so real and so naturally that I don't even associate that he's doing a voice. Great stuff.
