Box Office Bomb?
This movie rocked and was incredibly original. But it bombed? wtf? I remember wanting to see it when it came out, but I was to young...
Anyone have exact figures?

I don't think it broke $30 M domestically....but I agree with you. This movie is downright hysterically funny. Anyone who doesn't get it has no sense of humor.

I was like the OP, always wanted to see it but too young at the time. I am glad to see it on DVD... one of my favorite movies now.
A Day Without Sean Hayes is Like a Day Without Sunshine.
i saw this in theatres seated securely between my mother and father, neither of whom enjoyed it.
love it.
You must remember that the average person can barely find their *beep* while they are wiping it.
shareYeah it was a Bomb all right. So much so that Australia decided not to release it in cinemas after the poor reception in America. I personally loved the movie but I can understand why it flopped though the film was definitely an a "acquired taste".
I think the poor reception of the film may have influenced some of the actors to view the film as a failure as well. As John Stuart poked fun at the film at the Oscars telling audiences "Please rent it!".
Danny Devito in his director's commentary sounds also a bit wounded from the films commercial failure. But he goes on to suggest that he had an "absolute blast" working on the film. He also talks in the director's commentary enthusiastically about the film when viewing the scenes which you get a sense that despite the film's failure he is still proud of the final product.
I don't recall seeing any marketing for the film when it was first released. I just happened to catch it on cable and I'm glad I did.
"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"
Actually saw some commercials for this film back in the day, forgot about it and didn't recall it to much until I found it on DVD and checked it out-----it's a crazy, funny comedy with some very dark (at one point, too dark) humor running through it----that may have turned audiences off at the time. With all the star power in it, I'm surprised that this film dosen't get more props than it does, because it's entertaining, fun and just plain insane in its satirical skewering of the world of children's programing at the time.

I've always wondered if that resulted in some kind of backlash from the powers-that-be.
