NO Awards?
And no, a festival award for Dunst isn't enough. This film was much more brilliant enough, I would have understood if it missed out at the Oscars or something but they didn't even receive any critics attention. I think Joanna Lumley should have been considered for her performance. She was funny, sad, lost, quirky, bitchy, empty, angry, regal and utterly compelling. Often all at the same time. Her narration scenes are beautiful and some of her facial expressions (for example during the opening funeral scenes) are simply haunting. Not to mention she's a veteran who has been around for decades and had never really won any.
Jennifer Tilly was also very good, she was hilarious and goofy - but after Ince's death her character loses all her comic briliance and turns in a devastatingly convincing performance. And after her final confrontation with Hearst, she shows the growth and maturity of her character after the nights events really well. Herrmann was brilliant, Livingston was quite good and even Dunst (who I never thought was talented) was carried the film quite well throughout the second act.
Not to mention the gorgeous period costumes and sets, the wonderful screenplay choc-filled with witty, quotable dialogue and the score, which left a feeling of mystery in the air the whole time.
I would have given it:
Best Screenplay
Best Supporting Actor (Edward Herrmann)
*** Best Supporting Actress (Joanna Lumley) ***
Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Tilly)
*** Best Costume Design ***
*** Best Art Direction / Set Design ***
Best Cinematography
Best Score
