Filmed on Boat or on Sets?
Just curious if the movie was filmed entirely on the boat, or if some of it was filmed on sets? It's really beautiful.

shareThe interiors were all sets built in Berlin. The exteriors were shot on the boat in Greece.
shareI'm interested by this question as I found my attention wandering throughout the film - could the rooms have possibly been that large on a boat that size? Would it have accommodated all the rooms/cabins? Could it?
shareProbably not. In the special material offered on the DVD, there were several comments about how the boat interiors were designed to be big enough for the camera/sound/production crews to shoot. In a boat that size, there would not be the room needed for all the equipment and personnel behind the scenes. Hearst's boat was 220 feet long, and although that is a decent size boat for the time, its still not large enough to accommodate wide shoots like you find in Titanic, for example. BTW although it was referred to as a yacht in the movie, strictly speaking, it was a motorboat, not a yacht, as yacht's are supposed to be primarily sail driven.
shareTech Tech where on earth did you get the idea that yachts are mainly sail driven?
The hay day of the gentleman's yacht(motor driven) was during the period depicted in this film.
Many of the British motor yachts from this time were drafted in to assist with the Dunkirk evacuation.
This kind of yacht can (in the UK)can be seen in such prodigious yacht mariners like St Katherine's dock!
and to those who wonder if the interiors shown were possible in a yacht of William Randolph Hearst's yacht the answer is a categorical YES.
Surprising but possible.
