Marriage and Castes In India

Hello imdb community!!!

I liked the film very much.
I am not from India and I do not know so good the traditions there. I know there are some castes and subcastes there. Is it true that the people traditionally marry ONLY inside of their caste and never somebody from other caste???? Do the exceptions happen?
Could somebody from lower caste go to university or college and reach success?

Do Alice and Dubey belong to the same caste? If so is their caste lower than one of Aditi and her groom?

Thanks in advance

Regards

frage,

short version, it doesnt really matter much these days in india except in the villiages. It's more about marrying into a good family or a family. Some families are strict on only marrying into their ethnic group (punjabi's marrying punjabis, tamils marrying tamils). Given the cultural differences between them, its not quite as uptight as it seems. A Tamil marrying a Punjabi is like a frenchman marrying a german (not much in common culturally)

People in lower castes do go to college. Caste discrimination is illegal in India.

hope that helps.

Castes are illegal in India, but it still goes on unoffically.
And traditionally, you stayed in your particular caste throughout your life, and if you completed your dharma, or tasks in obligations in that particular caste, in the next life you would move on to a higher caste.

Q. Is it true that the people traditionally marry ONLY inside of their caste and never somebody from other caste???? Do the exceptions happen?

A. Generally True, but in Urban areas, there are lot of marriages that happen between people belongong to different castes and sometimes between different religions too. These marriages known as 'Inter caste' marriages were exceptions 50 years back, but are increasingly common nowadays.

Q. Could somebody from lower caste go to university or college and reach success?

A. Yes. One of the presidents of India K R Narayanan was born into a low caste. In General, there are reservation for people of lowest castes in Educational Institutions and Government Jobs to undo Generations of discrimination.

Q. Do Alice and Dubey belong to the same caste? If so is their caste lower than one of Aditi and her groom?

A. No. Dubey is a surname used by Brahmins, which is the Highest caste in Hindus. Alice on the other hand is a Christian Name. Not sure about the caste of Aditi, but Dubey's caste will be either higher or the same.

"Could somebody from lower caste go to university or college and reach success?"

Yes, as far as i know in universities/colleges whtever, they have a particular portion of seats kept vacant they are called SC/ST, scheduled casts and scheduled tribes, im not sure what percentage of seats at a uni are kept vacant from them tho

"Do Alice and Dubey belong to the same caste?"
(i am just copying and pasting this as this was my reply to another recent post about the same query)
Yea i think he was of a higher caste to Alice too, like i said its been a while since i saw the movie and as im not hindu, i might be wrong, but when he reaches home to his mother, and takes his shirt off, IF he wears a white thread-like thing diagonally around his torso, he is a 'Brahmin', i dont quite rememebr if he does have that , if he does then he is a brahmin....it was the highest among 4 casts, from wht i know, thats y, as u pointed out, he probably resisted Alice in the begining as she is implied as a lower one.

do enlighten me if im wrong
cheers!:)
