Why is it expensive to have daughters in India?

I'm just wondering why One of the friends of Lalit said that he was happy he didn't have daughters. Why is that? How do Indian weddings work? Who pays for the wedding and do family of the bride pay more than the broom's family? Thanks

In India, the bride's family must usually provide a substantial dowry.

In India, the marriages take place as described below:
The groom visits the brides place on the day of the wedding with a number of relatives and other acquaintences (called Baratis). All of then are considered as guests of the bride's family, and as head of the family, bride's father has to bear the expenses of all the Baratis for the duration of their stay. It gets worse if the groom belongs to other city. This places a huge financial load on bride's family.
Apart from this, there was a system of Dowry, which is now illegal according to law, in which the bride's family is supposed to give the married couple gifts and also cash, which in later years became more of a compulsion by the groom's family.

The brides family also is supposed to pay for the wedding in the U. S. It seems as if that's changing. I think it's the brides father is the one who is supposed to pay for it.

To clarify this answer, the wedding festivities takes places 2 times: once in the girl's home and once in the boy's house...
one is like this: whole family with relatives and friends of the groom is visiting the function at the bride's house
the other is this: a similar party of the bride is visiting the function at the groom's home.
I must admit that this movie is a very realistic view on India habits+mentality and even the Indian English, the houses and the streets - everything in all its details make me feel present in India!!!!

These days a NEW car is must have thing for daughters parents. If Broom does not have a car already ...its given that his family wants car from the daughters family.

Raniy, I presume car is subject to higher class people... The big mass of India can only aford a bicycle!!!!

Why do people love to generalise about India so much? India consists of so many different cultures and religious groups. The dowry system doesn't even exist among the Hindus in the state of Kerela for example.

reply

It does exist in kerala....
But the dowries are rather nominal and they don't kill brides and female embryos(and babies)...
Hence the high sex ratio in kerala(1041 females for 1000 males) compared to indian average(940 something for a 1000)...

reply

Part of the reason for that is because Kerala is highly literate in comparison to other states and compared to the national literacy.
