Alice's rosary?

I noticed that Alice wears a rosary as a necklace, however even among Catholics I've only seen this done by one other person, so it's unusual, as a rosary isn't meant to be treated like a fashion accessory. Alice doesn't seem to be Catholic, so is there any point this?

Having spent 17 years in Catholic schools, I can honestly say that many deeply religous people DO wear rosaries. It's not as common in the US; I think that it has something to do with the overwhemling protetantism and the country's focus on materialism (ie. people don't to be accused of turning a holy symbol into a "fashion accessory"). I have always been taught that while you cannot wear them because "they're pretty"[i really wanted to as a child], it is prefectly acceptable to wear them as a symbol of, and an aid to, your religous convictions.

Yes, what Lexibabi06 said is true. In Indian culture it would be perfectly natural for Alice to wear her rosary as a "mala" around her neck. Why do you think she isn't Catholic? Perhaps because she is attired in a sari? I think it is clear that while she is culturally Indian she is also RC.

The Rosary, isn't native to Roman Catholisism. As it has borrowed many traditions from pagan religions, the rosary happens to be one that was borrowed from Indian culture.

also if you notice when dubey goes into the kitchen to ask her for a drink of water, there's a cross on the wall with a lovely marigold garland round it. the fusion of the rc faith and indian culture being demonstrated beautifully. the equivalent to me is someone wearing a kilt and the hijab, a cross or whatever. you can show your culture and religion at the same time. lovely film.

Along with Hinduism and Islam, many people in India are Christian as in the case of Alice who is Catholic. Not sure why you say she "doesn't seem to be Catholic". Do most Catholics "seem" a certain way?

My father is Indian and my mother is white, and a big thing I noticed growing up was that everyone thinks just because you are Indian, you have to be a certain religion(as most people put it, a "non-white religion" listen to hindi pop and drink chai tea all of the time. I dunno, My father is very attached to India, and our family there (and in the US), but people never seemed to grasp the fact that not all people who were born in India are Hindu. I actually have a friend who is from Bengali who moved here when she was 20 and no one believed that there were Indian Jews.

Sorry if Im just blabbing about nothing.

While it isn't surprising that people would ASSUME (I don't know why) that India is solely comprised of Hindus and Muslims, his/her opinion is not exaggerated, coz I wouldn't call 2% of a billion people few. 20 million people, is actually quite a lot of people, it's actually almost half the population of my country. And I find it hard to understand why you think people wouldn't figure a minority religion cannot feature in a movie about Indian culture, give us a little credit please.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous
