Sarees for the groom's sisters and cousins?

In the scene where the bride's mother, Ria, Shashi aunty and Ria's mother are in the shop selecting sarees, they are buying sarees for Hemant's sisters and cousins. Why are they buying sarees for them? I remember a scene in Rajkumar Santoshi's Lajja, Maithili's wedding, in which the groom's mother etc. also received sarees on the day of the wedding from the bride's mother. Is this a tradition in Hindu weddings?

reply

I guess so cause my wife's family gave all my (the female ones, obviously :)) cousins, saris after the wedding

reply

It's a tradition in ALL Indian weddings- Hindu, Christian, Muslim, etc.

lol for my wedding my dad had to speand over £5,000 on saris and jewels for all of the women in my husbands side of the family...aunties/sisters/sister in laws/daughters of brothers/wifes of brothers/grandparents....etc

its a lavish event where two families meet....although it is usually at the cost of the brides father
