Any other recomendations?

I've recently gotten interested in Indian and Bollywood flims...Moonsoon Wedding has been my first real foray into Indian Cimema, aside from watching AVS on WYBE, which is the station we get it on in my area. Anyway, I was wondering if any one could make any other recomendations for other great Indian flims? I am really eager to know more! Thanks!

I shall call him Squishy, and he shall be mine, and he shall be my Squishy.

Monsoon Wedding is the only Indian film I've seen that's not Bollywood. (Except for Bride & Prejudice also, which is not Bollywood, although it is done in the style of Bollywood.) Many Bollywood films are ridiculous, and I don't know what your taste is. But two that I think you might like are actually two of my favorites - Kal Ho Naa Ho & Swades. They're touchingly serious but also sweetly lighthearted as Monsoon Wedding is. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (or DDLJ, for those in the know) is also classic. I should tell you, all three of these movies have the same leading man, Shah Rukh Khan, who's like the biggest star in India, and I haven't actually seen very many Bollywood films in which he is not the star.

Dil Chahta Hai is hilarious.

Lagaan was excellent, and was Oscar nominated.

Munnabhai MBBS is another good one, it runs along similar lines to Patch Adams without copying

If you want a proper out and ou colourful, OTT family melodrama then Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham is the film for you.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is good as well.

Thaat's enough to either get you completely hooked or to turn you off completely.

if you're looking for comedies, go for Dil Chahta Hai, Munnabhai MBBS, Bollywood Calling, American Desi or Dhoom(my favourite...it's a hilarious spoof on every action movie hollywood has come up with, right from taxi and ocean's eleven to the italian job and MI2). for more serious stuff go for Black, Fire, Ek Hasina Thi, Company, Satya, Mathrubhoomi...or just check out www.upperstall.com or www.mtvindia.com, their reviews are pretty good. as for kal ho naa ho and that lot, don't watch unless you can cry at cliche after cliche after cliche and shah rukh khan in orange pants. Swades is good, though.

If you want to watch simple and realistic cinema that is still bollywood then watch Bombay (on riots in bombay), Khamoshi, 1942 A love story (during the pre independence era as a back drop), Mr and Mrs Iyer (not bollywood but its amazing) , Saathiya (cute love story), Dil Hai Ke manta nahi, Mira Nair stuff, Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Bend it like Beckham, DDLJ (Indian classic...released in 95 but still playing in some theaters, Lamhe (great movie and unlike any other I've seen and its very well done), Page 3 -not bollywood but about the high society in Indian cities, and any movies with Shabana Azmi like arth and masoom- old 80s movies on families. Company, Border, Bhoot, Raat, Daddy...etc... etc...etc.

Yes!

See Munna Bhai.

While it's not as absolutely perfect as Monsoon Wedding, it has LOTS of charm, and a great message. Let me know how you like it.

I urge you to watch... "Everybody says I'm Fine" directed by Rahul Bose and starring Rehan Engineer.

Hope you like it.

I could recommend some of Mira Nair's other films, although I haven't seen many. Kama Sutra was okay, but I get the feeling it depended very much on some kind of shock value--some of the characters were plainly cheesy and I found it hard to be sympathetic to any of the characters and the dialogue was a bit grating at times.
Also highly recommend Deepa Mehta's work in Indian film.
The elemental trilogy, Fire, Earth and Water. (Haven't had a chance to see Water yet, but it looks good.)
She also did Bollywood/Hollywood, which I love--it's a very funny and touching movie. Rather like Bride & Prejudice, in that it's a Westernized look at Bollywood, but it's definitely more tongue-in-cheek than B&P, and I think it's wittier too. (B&P could only do so much--they had a pretty strict storyline to stick to.)
