Surely 'God's Hand' would be a much better title?

Surely 'God's Hand' would be a much better title? Where's 'Frailty' come from?

reply

"Frailty" comes from the frailty of a childs mind or the human mind for that matter. They can easily be fooled into believing in demons, ghosts or monsters when there young.

Hence the name...

I agree God´s hand or God´s work would have been a better title.

If it harms none, do what thou wilt.

reply

Except that goes completely against the ultimate revelation of the movie, which is that demons truly ARE real, and not just something that the fragile child's mind was tricked into believing.

reply

That's your interpretation. Not everyone's.

In my opinion, "God's Hand" would have been a better title. I compose music, so I've been titling songs for a long time now. Not that "Frailty" is a bad name, and your explanation does kind of makes sense. However, at first, we were lead to believe that the father was crazy, or frail minded himself. The same with the younger brother, since he seemed to be easily influenced by his father. However, it's revealed to us, that neither of them were frail minded, or crazy. They were actually capable of seeing people's sins and were truly doing God's work. All of their victims were murders, child molesters, abusive spouses, or all of the above. If anyone was frail minded, it was Fenton, but he wasn't fooled into believing in demons. If anything, it was the opposite, he was fooled into not believing, or he was blind to the truth.

If they used that title it would have ruined the movies twist.

reply

Maybe they didn't want to turn away people who weren't looking for a religious movie. Instead, they wanted them to leave disappointed about having been tricked into watching a religious movie.

reply

I understand the title 'Frailty' but think God's Hand is more memorable and a more fascinating title

Do guys like "the thing"?
They like it better than no thing.

The story is full of twists. "God's Hand" would remove some of the mystery that "Frailty" connotes.

"I didn't say that. The camera must have misheard me!"

Actually, in some countries this movie is titled "God's Hand."

reply

And in Mexico and Argentina, it's titled, "The Hand of the Devil." That's an interesting reversal of it.

reply

I genuinely didn't know that. Wow thats weird.

I think "Frailty" is a lot better: Frailty - physical or moral weakness.

It works on so many levels...

-The father sees Fenton's lack of faith as a moral weakness.
-Fenton sees his father's blind faith and willingness to kill people in the name of God as a moral weakness.
-Fenton sees Adam's faith in their father and willingness to kill people in the name of God as a moral weakness.
-Adam sees Fenton's killing of "non-demons" as a moral weakness.

"God's Hand" as a title would make the focus on the killings, and the serial killer specifically. "Frailty" shifts the focus to the family dynamic, and how the 3 of them each gauge each other's morality.

So if the movie was more about a serial killer and the police's search for him, "God's Hand" would be a more fitting title, but because it's primarily about the Meiks family, and how each of them deal with what they believe are the moral shortcomings of each other "Frailty" makes more sense.

In Brazil the movie is titled: Devil's Hand.

Nice Pre-Empt! There is now a series (at least a Pilot), which looks very like a TV version of this film, called... "Hand of God".
