The book it is based on is much better than this movie. They mashed a lot of things together and mixed up storylines.

That's kind of the norm. You can't cram everything in a movie that's just shy of two and a half hours.

The book had been out of print for years before the movie came out. They reprinted it but cut the entire last chapter and the epilogue out because it didn't match the ending of the movie. Ironically, they were still in the table of contents
