the ending totally sucked! (spoiler!)

this was a nice pic. started off light but got serious. but the ending just blew chunks! why did she have to give up her dreams and stay in cleveland. he could have been a lawyer anywhere! why didnt he just move to new york and be with her?

i think this film sends a bad message to women. you cant 'have it all'. you have to choose between career or romance. and dont expect the man to support your career choice. you have to give in to what he wants! that just sucks!
comments?

Sometimes when you get to where you thought you wanted to be, you find out it's not what you wanted afterall. Donna had everything she thought she wanted; Paris, first-class, international- but was missing the thing she really needed, her co-pilot. She never gave up her dreams, she just dreamt a different one. I love what Tom Baker says to Shake McGuire in "Cheaper By The Dozen" when Tom tell him that he's quitting the coaching job and Shake says,'Giving up the dream'; Tom's response it, 'Just going with another one.' Same here.

There's an awful lot of anger here, I mean, we're only talking about a movie, arn't we? I can remember when a bad movie didn't "suck", it was just bad. And we didn't "blow chunks", we just didn't recommend it. There seems to be a little civility or common courtesy lost in every generation. Quite simply put, the movie was light, it was meant to be light. Take it for face value. Sometimes actors take roles for reasons they'll never disclose publicly. You enjoyed the film or you didn't- it's that easy. To those who reduce themselves to using masked vulgarity, these words are as old as the bible and they're stale!! Do your friends and families a big favor and expand your vocabularies. Of course this is only IMHO

The movie was predictable .. but most romantic comedies are, When watching a romantic comedy I believe we need to expect 1 of 3 things (1.) A good romantic movie with some attempted funny scenes included i.e Pretty woman (2.) An attempted split down the middle classic romance/comedy movie i.e Bridget Jones Diary or (3.) A movie where romance is not so important to the story .. someone just wants to try make you laugh .. oh and guess what they make it a romantic comedy cause that`s the safest place to take it .. emotional ties with the characters and a "And They lived happily ever after" ending.

VIEW FROM THE TOP in my opinion aimed at a (3.) but failed by offering little in the shape of laugh material .. that said I`ll rate this movie 6/10 for the bits that did make me laugh .. Certainly not a classic but not deserved of a 5 or sub 5 rating either .. I have a feeling some material left behind in the editing room may have cost this movie a better reception.

My friend & I still can't understand how being a pilot is going to keep her at home with the kids & the sewing machine more than being a flight attendant...

She's still flying around in the plane, she's just sitting down instead of handing out peanuts.

I think that that ending was tacked on to make the movie less sexist.

It doesn't make sense.

I don't think the ending "sucked" nor do I have anything against it but I do feel that it was kind rushed...one minute she is back with her boy the next she is in a plane..it seems disjointed.

I really can't see where your comming from with the she just wants to be Mrs. Lawyer... she made the choice to leave flying. It never says she becomes a house wife. She simply gave up something she enjoyed for something she loved.

I sort of agree with the original poster. It was sexist in that she finally achieved what she had wanted for years and then gave it up for him. The scene at the end that showed she had become a pilot was so rushed that it seemed that it was tacked on to make the movie less sexist. It seemed that they broke up just because the relationship would become a long distance one. The problem still exists because she is now a pilot and will still be gone frequently. Why did she have to change locations and dreams? Why couldn't he have changed? What I really don't understand is why he just had to stay in Cleveland when they both said that Cleveland was just a waiting room for them. He knew when they started dating again in Cleveland that she wasn't going to stay there and yet he acted shocked that she was going to leave. I like the movie (not fantastic but entertaining) but the ending bugs me.

-That's actually what I thought. Not that there's something wrong with being a pilot or a flight attendant. It's just that the reason she quit being an attendant was because she wanted to be with the man she loved. Then she becomes a pilot, who stays away from home at least as much as an attendant... Oh well...

4 years later, but I'll respond. Maybe her pilot responsibilities were flying the shuttle based in Cleveland. That would have worked out. Or, by the time she became a pilot, many years later, they could have been anywhere. He was only finishing law school in Cleveland.

You made a great point here and I agree with you to some extent, however, I think in the end, she didnt really "give up" her dream for a man, seems like her dream was to be with him.

Do you remember that other movie Mona Lisa's Smile?? I think the point is, she was empowered because she had the ability to make her OWN CHOICE, to choose which route to take for her own life - which is the most important thing that counts.

Now, if she wasnt happy about leaving her job, then your comment would be 100% valid, however, I still understand where you are coming from.

this film is not about sending a message to women. why cleveland? he stated he moved back to the cleveland area because he missed his family.

and it is NOT easy to switch being a lawyer from one state to the next. there is a bar exam. which is huge.

and she saw in the paper he got a job at a big law firm...probably as junior partner. they don't put your pic in the paper just because you got a little job being a lawyer. it is reserved for big shot firms and placements.

i bet if she had wanted him to follow her, he would have.

both men and women have to choose sometimes between job and family. my dad did.

bonk!
