Queer as Folk Marathon - Season 1 - Episode 16
Episode 116 Or, like I prefer to call it: YOU SO CARE ABOUT ME!
I loved the first scene, especially the choice of using A MAN AND A WOMAN as a background to Michael and David’s frolicking on the snow, buying groceries… The title of the song says it all. I wish we had snow in Brazil!
Michael looks extra cute in this episode. Well, the love birds look so happy in those scenes! I can understand Michael’s frustration about David paying for everything, although David wants to do it. Michael doesn’t want to be his boy toy. As money means power, Michael is like a wife to David, in th eold traditional sense. Maybe this is the only way David can be in a relationship, when he’s in control. But IMO when two people are in a relationship, living together, it’s not about money, it’s about soul connection. So, who cares who pays for things?
As David says: “I can afford it, you can’t, so what’s the big deal?” David is generous and he wants to make Michael happy, he does everything he can so Michael doesn’t have to worry about anything. I guess it’s a little different with Brian and Justin. Brian is the one with power and money, but as I remember in their future relationship, money was never an issue to them, not even Brian being the one with the career and success. Maybe because Justin is so young, and still in school… I wonder who pays for Justin’s tickets and drinks in Babylon. Well, he makes a little money working in the diner.
That chocolate death cake makes my mouth water. Damn diet!
I keep remembering that Mel made a financial sacrifice so Lindz could stay home take care of the baby, but she kept throwing her sacrifice on Lind’s face whenever she had the chance, so what kind of sacrifice was that? When you give something to the person you love, you don’t keep reminding them how great you are for doing it. So, in comparison, David is totally different from Mel. I like that he takes a little of Michael’s money, even though that’s clearly less than half. I think it’s fair that each partner contributes proportionally to how much money each one makes. However, Michael finds out later that David is not cashing his checks. The bank teller is one of the prettiest faces ever shown in QAF! What a HUNK!
Girls’ night at Babylon! Dyke’s night! Oh, hot! Mel seems a little lost lost trying to put herself out there. Emmett and Ted are very sweet to go to Babylon with her to support her. “The muncher mesh?” She feels sad thinking about Lindsay.
OK, B/J’s cute car scene. Brian taking Justin to school? Hum, hum… it seems someone has been sleeping over a lot lately. And when Justin complains that Brian drinks too much coffee, they look like an old married couple. Hahaha! Little Justin is really a genius for getting a high SAT score, despite all the problems he had with his family. And the boy applied to Ivy League colleges (does that mean his dad has lots of money?). Then the question: “Are you going out of State?” and then Brian looks the other way, pretending he doesn’t give a damn. So the blondie realizes how much Brian wants to know if he’s moving away from Pittsburgh. I think this is a historic moment in this relationship.
I have to say, it looks so strange for me seeing someone drive with one hand and hold a cup of coffee with the other hand! We have stick gear cars Brazil, so we you need both hands to drive.
I’d like to express my frustration and hate every time I see Justin being discriminated and humiliated by his school mates and teachers. As someone who works in the education area, I think it’s unacceptable that the school won’t take any action against any kind of discrimination, especially homophobia. This is about education and socialization. What kind of human beings this school intends to release in the world? Bullies like Chris Hobbs? (I hate him too, by the way). We have lots of campaigns in Brazilian schools to help teachers to fight homophobia and to promote acceptance of each other’s differences in schools, as much as we have homophobic conservative right-wing groups fighting against LGBT rights.
And there goes Mel to Lindsay’s and… finds a French dude living there! Honestly this French guy storyline has to be one of the dumbest in this show. And a parade of clichés and French stereotypes. Like playing Edith Piaf when Gui opens the door. Like every French person is always listening to old music. And Gui saying that in France love affairs are meaningless. Another stereotype people keep repeating about the French. Anyway, what an obnoxious guy!
The locker room scene. Peter Paige’s gotta have the most beautiful body of the group! That locker room is the land of the earthly delights! I love when the four do things together, like going to the gym. Emmett to Michael:”Honey, it’s every gay boy’s dream to be a kept woman.” Lol’d when Melanie enters the locker room and the guys complain, but when Emmet says she’s a lesbian, everybody says: “Ok, then.”
Debbie was very sweet to talk to Justin about what happened in school, and encourage him to stand up for himself, and supporting him at the Gay and Straight Students Alliance meeting. I think there’s an “Ooops” moment here. Debbie tells Justin her sister wouldn’t let her kids play with Michael because he was gay. This sister was never mentioned before and will never be mentioned again. In Season 4, Debbie mentions Vic’s the only sibling she has. So I suppose this sister does not exist.
A trip to Paris? First class tickets and to stay at George V with the man that you love? Who would refuse that? I think Michael made the right decision about Paris. But I think David should take Michael’s money, at least as much as Michael can pay his way. David tries to keep his relationship with Michael according to the straight model power structure. With him on top, of course. Anyway, I don’t think David and Michael’s sex scene was hot.
I love that the whole gang goes to Lindz’s house to support Melanie, although Ted and Emmet give in to their desire to taste the enemy’s rabbit. I love that Brian picks Gus up from Guillaume’s arms as soon as he gets there, very territorial. The obnoxious French guy story line is totally out of character in my opinion. First I can’t see Lindsay sacrificing her future by marrying someone she hardly knows. And for what? To fight injustice? I don’t buy that. Since when she’s a human rights activist? Since when she’s a selfless woman who would do anything to help others?
And another thing I can’t understand. When Mel left, did she stop helping Lindz financially? What about Gus? Lindz mentions that Guillaume is helping her with the mortgage, besides, she had to come back to work. I thought they had bought the house together. Has Mel cut her off? And another strange thing in this scene: not once Mel took a look at Gus! A parent would pick him up immediately (which Brian did!). Lindsay was very unpleasant with Brian in the park. She could at least understand that he’s her friend, wants the best for her and knows she’s making a mistake.
I enjoyed very much the scene of the gang in Woody’s, again supporting Melanie, even Brian. How sad the boy’s memories about being bullied in school, when Justin tells them what happened to him. But Brian’s story’s a winner. This gives us a rough idea about how it’s like growing up as gay kid. The fear, the humiliation, the pain, the isolation. THAT’S GOTTA STOP. And again, I was totally surprised to hear Emmet say (at Woody’s) that “Lindsay is always taking care of others.” WHAT????????
Honestly I had difficulty paying attention to Brian and Justin’s conversation about the Gay and Straight Student Alliance. Wow, they look beautiful naked and Brian covering Justin’s body with little kisses... I’M SURE NO TRICK GETS THAT. Even when Brian gets up, I couldn’t concentrate either, all I could look at was his perfectly shaped behind dancing on the screen all the time!
I can’t even begin to say how much I loved the last scene. Brian willing to beat up Chris Hobbs to defend Justin, made me love them even more (if that’s possible). Brian was going to punch him. DON’T YOU DARE TO TOUCH MY BABY, YOU PUNK. Justin was very brave and courageous, I’m proud of him although we know that Chris Hobbs’ revenge will be ruthless . I thought it was sweet of Ted and Emmet to wait for Justin on the stairs after Hobbs left and Brian had already come in. They only entered Woody’s after Justin entered, just in case Hobbs would come back.
