This movie did very bad didn't it? But is it good?

I don't wanna judge by box office, is this movie any good. It was outta theaters it seemed in a week

reply

I thought it was a good film, nothing too mind blowing but definitely worth seeing, and john leguzamo did a great job of pulling off a dramatic performance.

reply

That's an understatement!! He brought the pain.

reply

I wouldnt say it did bad. Look at the box office page. Budget of #3.5 mil, and made $17+ Mil, and was out for 8 weeks.

Ha ha, its not like its a major twist or anything. Its the ONLY reason to watch the movie though. Just skip to the end, you won't miss much. :D

reply

this movie has some of the worst acting i have seen in a long while. Very poorly casted IMHO.

reply

The film actually made a profit of 35 million dollars so it was an indie success. As for its quality, I thought it was a great film.

Yeah it seems like there are alot of people out there with the pulp-fiction, usual-suspect mentality about what a good movie is supposed to be. Empire is nowhere near the two mentioned above. I live in a very intellectual environment (a top10 liberal arts college) so everybody gets really irritated seeing this movie, saying it's so "predictable, boring, horrible etc." It seems like they all prefer watching "waking life."
But I will have to go forth and say I like it alot. It's one of those tragedies where you kinda lie between feeling symphathy or reservation toward the falling hero. This latino is some serious shitt. You watch him in Romeo n Juliet with all those fancy lines and you watch Empire with shitty grammars and childish lines and you're like: "He must be good to make that transformation." It feels real...I feel like john leguzamo was the real one-track minded, illiterate, inadequate, self-centered, self-insecure typico out there.
Definitely a good film to watch. If you're really intellectual and would despise crime/drama movies that don't resemble "Se7ven" and "Memento," you'll be disappointed.

Ok, I'm Puerto Rican and lived in Massachusetts for 14 years. He fit the bill. I don't know about the other guys, but that is definitely how people like that act. My best friend turned into that guy.

I just wanted to compliment you on your unbiased and lucid observations. So many people fall into the movie snob trap of comparing movies to other films in their genre, that it becomes hard to judge a film in and of itself. It is nice to know that other people are willing o love the art for what it is and not what it is supposed to be.

yo, i thought this was a great movie. If you're into some over produced, hardcore gangster movies about drugs (Scarface, Belly), you'll love it. It's visually beautiful and non-stop gangsta. Leguizamo is at his best. It's also very reminicent of Goodfellas with the style of narration. Pure entertainment. I feel like it's a pretty under-rated film.

reply

I liked it. It was nothing amazing but certainly a watchable movie.

Personally, I loved it. It could have been a classic like 'Goodfelllas', but it get's a little predictable in the middle. All in all, it's worth seeing.

reply

I thought he pulled off the part perfectly. In response to Chalaco, I'm from New York and I'm Latino. I also study at highly accredited liberal arts college and we screened "Empire" and everyone thought it was a great film so I don't know where that previous post is about.

i thought it was a great movie. only problem is, it hasn't come out on cable yet!!! has it?

John Leguizamo is pretty solid in this movie... if your into that street s*it this movie is pretty good i gave it a 8 out of 10.

reply

The trailer made the film look like a action flick. The trailer makes the film feel like it's all about that one guy screwing over John Leguizamo but the story is a lot more than that.

I found the movie very disappointing. As a fan of John Leguizamo, I was expecting much more. I didn't compare it to any other movie. I just thought it failed as a thriller and as a crime drama. And I thought the pointless faux-lesbians-in-the-bathtub scene was ridiculous and completely gratuitous.

I say save your money and rent something else.

even if you did not like that scene. i would still not let it ruin the entire movie for you because it was fairly brief and it was not like it was shown for any length of time.

for me personally i thought the film is quite underrated as it's a film i am always entertained by when i watch it.

p.s. it was somewhat point for me to reply to this post since the user has not been active since sometime in 2006. lol ... but it was worth the post because it lets other people reading this know the truth with the scene (that it was brief) and not as long/bad as the quote makes it out to be.

I remember when this came out it was one of my favourites, and i like all kinds of movies (goodfellas, waking life, fight club, pulp fiction, etc) and still find it to be a great movie. I also like how the ending isnt as cliche as most movies these days.

reply

I agree with John's effort in this film.. Though I feel bad seeing him in a lower level type of film than he should be in by now.. Worth a late night cable viewing..
