I think Sophie told Hyeok that because she really genuinely didn't know how best to handle the situation, despite her intelligence. As the investigation had been wrapped up, she just let the fact slip. She didn't realise the effect it would have on Hyeok because she didn't appreciate the relationship between Hyeok and the others, although she might have understood the basic facts. She could not understand Korean relationships because she was a foreigner- that is what her actions said to me. The tone of the film underscores the shared minguk between North and South Korea, relevant to its release at the time of the North/South summit. Maybe Sophie's character represents the tragedy of Koreans removed from their country by the diaspora after the Korean War- and their failure to adequately understand Korean culture.
