But at the moment, he had no way of knowing she was on a suicide mission to drive off a bridge. If there was no hand-brake, there's no way he could reach the Emergency Brake under her left foot. Grabbing the ignition or trying to jam the car into Neutral or Park would've been wise.
Very True. Good Post.
Yes the 'Emergency Brake'
(Which it is really called a Parking Brake in modern terms) is on the left side of the driver. It is a Peddle.
It 'Clicks' as you push down on it and locks up the Emergency Brake/Parking Brake which is hooked-up by a cable.
(It can break too...No Pun Intended...The cable to the Emergency Brake can snap)This is why you have a Release
(A T-Bar Pull Tab) to unlock the Emergency Brake/Parking Brake.
It is so you do not put all the stress on the Automatic Parking Gear...OR... a Manual Transmission.
On Manual Transmission they still have a Hand Brake which also 'Clicks' when you pull it/use it when you park a Manual Transmission.
Look at vintage automobiles and you will see a Hand Brake in the center either on the floor or under the dash.
They had a Trigger/Hand Release on them so you could actually use them like a Regular Brake if your main brakes failed.
I have used the Emergency Brake/Parking Brake before when my Regular Brakes would not work.
(On an Automatic Transmission)By Pulling on the Release to the Emergency Brake/Parking Brake
(T-Bar) you can use it very much like a Regular Brake.
I would suggest Pumping them because that Brake is NOT ABS or Powered in anyway.
So he would not been able to use that brake. He could of leaned over and stomped on the Regular Brake, throw the car into 'Park' and shut off the ignition.
However, this would have locked up the steering wheel in whatever position it was in.
FYI: This was a 1970 Buick Skylark probably with a 350 cubic inch engine.
I always liked that style of the Skylark. They were quite peppy.
Light rear end and could lose control very easily since the rear wheel drive is what we would call 'All Ass'.
Here are some photos of that scene:

I can simply Hold the Trigger and use it like my Regular Brakes.
In fact I have practiced with it just to learn the feel of it IN-CASE I would ever need to use it like a Regular Brake.
I always use it as a Parking Brake because I do not trust leaving a Manual Transmission 'In Gear' when I leave my Truck.
It could 'Pop' out of gear
(Neutral) and roll away given the right amount of pressure like a hill/incline.
So I make it a habit of always pulling that Hand Brake when I park my Truck
Think OutSide of the 'Box'!
