And wow. I did not realize Vanilla Sky was a exact shoot for shoot, word for word, remake of the original. It was literally like watching Van Sants Psycho. The only thing that was different was the occasional overly sentimental lines Crowe throws in his movies.

"Vanilla sky" does literally copy many scenes, but it stuffs them with too many songs, making them resemble to videoclips and loses the oniric atmosphere of the original.
...And couldn't stand Tom Cruise in this.

I have seen both the original and Vanilla Sky multiple times, and there are numerous differences and it is clearly not a shoot for shoot, word for word copy...there are too many differences to even mention.
With that said, I like both a lot, including their differences.
