I don't think it was a deliberate set-up in that he could possibly have foreseen how badly it would go. It seems likely that he, having just watched David steal away another one of his dream girls (first Julie, now Sophia), and knowing David wasn't particularly attached to Julie, was trying to get Julie by giving her a reason to be angry at David and leave him. Not exactly the most classy thing a friend could do, granted. But hardly a set-up. He couldn't have known that Julie would go all Fatal Attraction on David. And lying about it later? It's not hard to see why he wouldn't want to admit that he inadvertently got Julie killed and left David's life in tatters. Would you be in a rush to tell your friend that?
So, yeah, Brian screwed the pooch pretty badly, but let's not ascribe any greater plotting to it than simple lust and an attempt to win Julie over. It's entirely possible for him to still be a true fried. He's just a true friend who made one terrible choice that would have far-reaching repercussions that he never foresaw.
(It's "buddy," incidentally, not "bunny." *beep* buddy is a pretty common term,)
