Long chase scene better than Bullitt or French Connection
All three films had great chase scenes, but I think The Bourne Identity was the best.

shareAgreed.
It was totally realistic... well, maybe not totally!
But it was so unexpected, and made more special by the shocked reaction of unwitting passenger AND driver.
First time I saw it, in the cinema, I was shocked too.
It also had some humor in it. Just before he drives down the stone steps, he says something like, "There's a bump coming up."
shareIt also helps that Bourne had 30 years of technologogical advancements to work with. Not to mention that the budget for the car chase alone would have been 10 times more than the budget for the entirities of The French Connection and Bullit combined!

Not really. The film wasn't using CGI for the car chase sequence. But the entire film went over budget because of continual conflict between the studio and the director/writers, resulting in lots of rewrites and reshoots. Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia article about the filming of the car chase:
"The acclaimed car chase sequence was filmed primarily by the second unit under director Alexander Witt. The unit shot in various locations around Paris while Liman was filming the main story arc elsewhere in the city. The finished footage was eventually edited together to create the illusion of a coherent journey. Liman confessed that 'anyone who really knows Paris will find it illogical,' since few of the locations used in the car chase actually connect to each other. Liman took only a few of the shots himself; his most notable chase sequence shots were those of Matt Damon and Franka Potente while inside the car."
Although probably expensive, the chase wouldn't have come close to costing more than 10 times the cost of the other two films combined. Here are the approximate inflation-adjusted costs for each film in 2002 dollars:
Bourne Identity = $60 million
Bullitt = $25,520,000
French Connection = $15,312,000
Best car chase in movie history? This or "to Live and Die in LA" IMHO.

Another good car chase is in The Seven-Ups. I haven't seen all these chases in a while so I can't say which is better or best. But if you read the reviews of The Seven-Ups, several people say its the best, lasting 14 minutes. One review says it's better than Bullitt and French Connection combined. The only memory I have of To Live and Die In L.A. is that the chase begins on the wrong side of the freeway and the action is going against the oncoming traffic.
shareIt reminded me of The Italian Job.
"You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"
The Seven Ups chase see is very good and probably equal to Bullitt. French Connection, the original Gone in Sixty Seconds and Vanishing Point (which is almost entirely a chase scene) are also excellent.
Bullitt is my favorite. Steve McQueen actually drove the Mustang. It gets points from me for that. Plus, the music stopping when the chase starts is brilliant. The sound of the engines and McQueen double clutching is the best soundtrack.
Much as I love this movie, I don't think I rank the chase scene that highly. There are many other parts of this film that I enjoy much more than that. The embassy scene is probably my favorite. One thing that kind of hurts the chase scene for me is the music they used, because that same song was used (to much better effect) in the dance club scene in Collateral. So whenever I hear that song, it makes me think of Collateral.
shareI wasn't ranking the chase scene relative to other parts of this movie. I was ranking it vs. some other movies' chase scenes. It's too bad that the music from a film that wasn't made until two years later ruins this chase scene for you.
shareI tend to think the chase through Moscow in Supremacy was better, though it was more of a savage, demolition derby than in Identity...but that's just me. When that car t-boned the driver's door on Bourne's BMW taxi, I nearly jumped out of my skin.

That's the way it goes. French Connection set the standard and then later films have to keep topping them.
