Best of the Trilogy in Every Way

The mystery of Bourne's past, identity, and abilities in addition to his unconscious actions make for a very interesting screenplay. The story also has a nicely resolved ending. Furthermore, we aren't subjected to Greengrass' shaky, close-up, quick-cut fight scenes in Identity. In Supremacy and Ultimatum, a pattern of chase scene, exposition, chase scene also became very apparent and even stale in my opinion. They seem to recycle the original by having some dick-in-charge from the CIA lead a chase (and complete failure) to capture or kill Jason Bourne. This just got a bit tiring, although Jason Bourne is a pretty compelling character, and Matt Damon breathed even more life into the role, which made Supremacy and Ultimatum at least fairly enjoyable.

Indeed.

If you wanted to watch the most memorable, definitive Bourne film,
You pick identity

Agreed. This first film is not only the best Bourne film, but one of my favorite films of the entire decade. One of the few action-suspense films of the 00s that totally works, grabs and keeps your attention, is re-watchable, and is completely satisfying. The sequels feel like retcons, and they go the route of thinking that "more and bigger is better". But Part 2 is ruined by the shaky cam and also a rather boring subplot of Bourne assassinating that girl's parents, while the subplot of Bourne and Wombosi is much more interesting. And Part 3, although very entertaining, is virtually a straight-up action film that lacks the depth and layers of the original.

Agreed. Identity is definitely my favorite. I've always hated the way they start Supremacy which is why that one will always be my least favorite.

One of my favorite movies of all time.

Yes it's a brilliant film, and the best Bourne movie. Great score.

reply

Same here. The second and third ones don't have the charm Identity has. And i still can't understand how it's not rated the best in series.

Although I lean more towards Supremacy as being the superior film in the trilogy overall, there is one thing Identity does perfectly; the atmosphere.

There's an almost other-worldly feel to proceedings, helped with parts of the synth soundtrack, but also the lighting of Paris at night time. It's dreamlike at times.

But I do feel there are some issues with narrative - the issues during filming show at times, it's a little uneven occasionally. Still a great movie though.

Really tired of these threads. ALL three films are excellent. Stop being a try hard.

reply

Couldn't agree more. The best Bourne Movie is whichever one I am watching at the time. Wonderful entertainment which can be watched again and again, without boredom

reply

Supremacy and Ultimatum are hardly excellent, they are over the top - especially Ultimatum - and therefore lost what made Identity so very special.
Have your opinion, but stay reasonable and don't act as if your personal preference is the truth, especially if you have nothing factual to back it up.

There are reasons why Identity received better ratings than any other Bourne movie, you know. And no, it doesn't always come down to taste, that's just one factor.

This movie is excellent in every major way, watching it right now..
