dissection SPOILERS scene #1
I realize that this is likely not a good movie, in great part because of its disjointed history. Nevertheless, it is one of my favorites, a "comfort movie":Like comfort food, perhaps not really good for you or loaded with intrinsic value, but still something that makes one somewhat happy. Not a favorite in the same manner as "The Bicycle Thief," for example, but still a favorite I watch a lot, to relax.
So, just for fun,I am recording observations, scene by scene, and, here we go...
I like the band in the opening ok, and the song is catchy, in a way. They are no Joy Dvision or Dan or Zep, but they are ok, and they try hard. But, the interplay between the audience and the band is so forced, so awkward, it becomes squirm-worthy. And that cutesy fake howling. Yuck. And how did they find such a relatively large number of people completely lacking in any ability to react to the music? It's like they all had a "rhythmoctomy."
On to the fortune-teller. If MST3000 was riffing this, when she suddenly gets her vision of impending carnage, they would bust on her for looking like someone passed really bad gas. And for those old enough, when she grabs the girls' hands: "It's dishwashing liquid, you're soaking in it."
Time for something that is hopefully a bit more constructive. I think Mya had arranged in advance for the teller to steer Shannon away from the guy who is ultimately the Alpha Wolf. Mya was so pushy for the reading, and the teller gave an almost conspiratorial glance to her. Then, the true vision overwhelms the teller, and although Mya tries to fight through the sudden change, the reading gets derailed from its original track. Mya is ticked and heads out. Shannon is there a moment longer, but Mya has vanished. Shannon goes to the beach, mystified by the de-Myafication, looks in the sky to the full orb, cue "blue moon, you saw me standing alone..."
Now, MAYBE they hooked up later, Mya got dropped off, and then Shannon got nailed. Maybe they drove separately. I just do not think so. Even if so, why would Mya run off like that? As we see later, as she tries to get in tight with Alpha Male, she apparently has not spoken to her friend the past day: Close girl friends do not do that. She would check in to see how she's doing, see if she's going to the party that night, UNLESS she had an ulterior motive.
I understand the isolation of Shannon was seen as needed to follow up on the dire warning, to invoke imminent threat, but without some type of backstory it does not make sense. Too much into a B-movie? Maybe. Probably. Later.
