Nicholson drives past a movie theater marquee with "Sideways" on it -- BEFORE "Sideways" Was Made
A funny in-joke:
While Jack Nicholson is driving through some godforsaken Midwestern town, a small theater has a marquee that says "Theater 1: Closed for Repairs" and "Theater 2: Sideways."
Some choice.
Funnier still: yes, the director of "About Schmidt," Alexander Payne, also directed "Sideways."
But he made "Sideways" TWO YEARS AFTER he made "About Schmidt."
I could see the characters in "Sideways" driving past a theater with "About Schmidt" on the marquee but...a movie that had not even been MADE yet?
I guess that Alexander Payne knew that "Sideways" would be next up on his work schedule.
And now, all these years later (2020)...it seems only natural that "Sideways" would be on a movie marquee.
