How the rating is still at the low 7.2 is beyond me. This film stands as one of the best of the decade and will possibly be remembered as Jack Nicholson's best acting effort. I have seen few films use irony or rather a sardonic tone of narrative more effectively and in such a funny, yet meaningful and evocative way.

shareExactly right. This is unquestionably one of the top films of the decade. Alexander is a genious, and will always be one of my favorite film makers, eventhough he's only really made 4 great films. "The Descendents" is good, not great. Its Nicholson's best performance in the second half of his career.
The film is tragic, yet so real, its almost beautiful. Its sad that so many movie-goers need a contrived "happy ending" to enjoy a film.
"Dear Ndugu, I'll bet you can't wait to cash this check and go get yourself something to eat".
