Have you lived in a suburb like the one Schmidt is living in?

Observe what the suburban life has to offer. I saw three AUTO PARTS stores, a Dairy Queen, a Johnny's cafe, a K MART, a Papa Johns and a Barbershop. It didn't seem like anyone had anything fun to do except eat out at a new restaurant every Saturday. Nothing changes day by day and all of the buildings look the same.

Is this what mainstream society dictates our lives should be? A suburban hell?

There must be some strange, intangible connection between thinking that mainstream society is dictating your life to you, and thinking that barbershop starts with an upper case b.

Are you kidding Vincenzo? Suburbian life is fantastic. Usually good neighbors; a calm, safe neighborhood; nearness to restaurants, shopping, food; nearness to a big city to see "big city" attractions, i.e. plays, ballets, sporting events, clean air, green surroundsings, gardens, schools. And in this day and age with the internet, everyone is clued into what is "happening" in the world regarding style, entertainment, politics and society.

Ditto. There is a reason most people with some money move to the suburbs. Everything is available the surroundings are safe and clean and, as someone else posted, life is what you make of it. You can have a shallow, crappy, repetitive life in the city or the country also.
