lol I cried during the last 2 - 3 minutes

Emotionally heavy stuff... Jack nicholson doesn't usually make me cry, but this movie was the exception.. and what a brilliant performance it was.

An ancient race... as Charles Bronson put it.

Saw this for the first time last night. I cried too. But we don't have to turn in out Man Cards because Jack cried too!

The last scene is such an emotional knockout because it comes as such a surprise. I feel like the rest of the movie sets you up for almost the direct opposite of what we get in the last 3 minutes. It's brilliantly done.

Guys like Spielberg could learn from Payne on how to not telegraph your pass if you want an emotional response from your audience!

exactly!! I saw The Descendants this afternoon, very entertaining film; and George clooney at his finest. Not as amazing as About Schmidt but its a quality film.

I could feel the tears welling up but I tried to hold them back.

I was unsuccessful.

Some people on this board are criticizing the ending as a contrived tear jerk moment. This is true in many films, but certainly not with "Schmidt".

There was profound truth in that final moment, as there is in so much of Payne's works.

The ending was certainly not contrived. It was, like you said, quite profound.

I don't think there was any other way the film should have ended...
