Warren possibly not Jeannie's biological father?

I never thought about this, but his friend said that his affair with Helen was about 25-30 years ago. Maybe the reason his daughter feels no connection with him is that he's not even her real father. It also fits with the general theme of the movie that no one genuinely cares about him or understands him.

Jeannie is older than 25-30. Probably closer to 40 (Hope Davis' age in real age life). Also if Ray was really her father it probably would have been revealed in the love letters.

There is no reason to believe that Schmidt's wife might not have had another dalliance than the one we know of. Besides, that was a big pile of letters! They weren't written in a week. That affair might have been from a time that did result in the conception of Jeannie. After all, Jeannie looks a lot more like Ray than she looks like Warren.
Just sayin'.

Nah, I think you're reading too much into this. The affair that his wife had was nothing but a footnote in the story when all was said and done.

reply

Hmmmm...

You make a good point. Even though Hope Davis was 38 at the time of filming, I have a hunch that she was around the 25-30 age mark in the film (unless her real age is mentioned in the film, then my hunch will be rendered moot).

It's certainly something to think about...

I think its pure speculation and misreading of the film. I see nothing at all in the screen play that would hint at this. I also think Jeanie was meant to be in the 30-35 range, and perhaps even older. Warren being 66, would mean that she was born when he was 31-35 when she was born. Its pretty hard to imagine a couple of that generation having their first child that late in life.

She's a girl that probably didn't have the happiest childhood, and perhaps wandered bit before finding herself and what she wanted.

What's important to remember is that this is fiction, so we can only judge on the information we are given. Sometimes I think people lose sight of this.

You make a very good point. But I still can't help but think about it...

Perhaps Payne slips that in there to give the viewer something to think about, but I tend to doubt it. I thought there a moment where they said the affair was like 20 years ago. This would preclude any chance that Warrenn wasn't Jeanie's father. I'll have to rewatch.

Yeah, good point.

But who knows, maybe it stopped 20 years ago but they started the affair 30 years ago (for example).

But, I think I'm looking too far into things.

having joe biden be her father would be a cool twist.

The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

Would be a good premise for 'About Schmidt 2: Ndugu Rises'

Good post.

Jeannie is a bit long in the tooth to be getting married. We are meant to believe that she is jumping at her chance to marry now before she is left a spinster.

Hope Davis is wonderful in this role.

^She's always brilliant.

It's a thought, but Schmidt remarks at one point that Jeannie is a 'little past her prime', which 25-30 wouldn't be. However, a lot of people would consider 38 years of age for a woman getting married for the first time to be 'a little past her prime'.

So for that reason, I'd go with Jeannie being in her late 30's.

reply

Yeah, you're probably right. Like I said, it's just a thought.

I could have sworn he specifically said she was 30 or 31 in that scene, but since nobody else has brought it up I must assume I'm mis-remembering.

reply

It could had been a possibility but the film did not explore this aspect.

Its that man again!!

Jeannie's full name is Jeannie Boardwine Schmidt.
Kind of like she has two surnames.
Just thought I would throw that into the mix:)

Look at how is wife treats him in the first part of the film. I'm sure she treated him like that as Jeannie was growing up, so part of that behavior probably transfered to her plus she probably doesn't have a lot of respect for her father because he just stood by and never stood up to her mother.
